Still keeping an eye on Sweden. Death rate is now around double of the US and 3 tines that compared to its neighbors...
"We are starting to near 3,000 deceased, a horrifyingly large number," noted the chief epidemiologist at Sweden's public health agency, Anders Tegnell, at a press conference on Wednesday.

Tegnell, who has been leading the country's COVID-19 response and previously defended the nation's decision not to impose a lockdown, this week admitted he was "not convinced" the unconventional anti-lockdown strategy was the best option to take.

"I'm not convinced at all - we are constantly thinking about this," Tegnell told Aftonbladet, the Swedish newspaper based in the capital Stockholm

I swore off national news a long time ago but I agree on the local news and internet sources. One of the best in Iowa for just giving facts is a local TV sports reporter that doesn't have anything else to do.

Oh....

But you could have at least used aeration tines....

:ohno:

(As I was typing that last sentence, it autocorrected to “tunes”, which in turn just autocorrected back to tines)

We just pulled 3/8 cores two weeks ago. Verticut and redragged after and the recovery is twice as fast.

Last fall we tried top dressing first and then solid tining which also sped up recovery.

We happened to have CNN on the tv last night after watching "Sherlock" on Netflix (great show btw, big fan of Benedict Cumberbatch) and it must have been around 10PM or so and I think it was the Chris Cuomo show - good golly, what a horrific hot mess that show is, and now I know why people have been using the "fear porn" expression - it was like watching those propaganda news reels you saw throughout the "Starship Troopers" movie, but that was a fictional dystopian future. I don't watch FOX as that was crap almost the moment it started, but CNN used to be something worthwhile. I knew it was pretty much the left equivalent of FOX but since I watched it only sparingly I had no idea how bad it was. If people are actually watching and believing that crap then we're in a lot more trouble than I thought. Yikes.

GannonFan wrote: Thu May 07, 2020 11:50 am Good article here from ABCNews, going over how surprisingly hospitals were/are one of the hardest hit parts of the economy as a result of the pandemic, which of course is the one sector you don't want hindered during a pandemic. The one part that caught me was how much it's been hit...

The second hardest hit industry - that's crazy. With all the talk of re-opening things, I don't think there's been enough done to re-open hospitals and to make the case that going to the hospital is safe. There's such fear out there that hospitals are basically germ centers at this point that people are refusing to go to hospitals even if they're having a hear attack or a stroke. Heard on NPR the other day the story of a 40 some year old woman who spent 5 days at home having a stroke before finally going to the hospital, and by then there was so much damage they couldn't save her, when normally her condition was very recoverable if treated early.

People think that hospitals have been overrun, people think that hospitals are fill with Covid patients right now, and the fault for that lies with every leader out there at every level and it lies with the media. And in the push to get people back to work we haven't made this a big enough issue.

We just need to open up the county cautiously. Make sure the vulnerable are sheltering in place if they desire. Allow the same options at stores and restaurants for curb-side pickup, and virtual Dr Appointments for office visits when applicable, remote work options. The rest of the population should go back to business as usual. Fans at sports events, restaurant seating as normal etc, etc. This way we would protect the vulnerable and save the economy.
That's what I've been saying we should have been doing since mid-April. We know how to mitigate this - masks in public and at businesses, disinfecting at regular intervals at businesses, work from home where it's possible to reduce number of folks at a business, have capacity restrictions on restaurants and stores and encourage curbside where possible, temperature checks on employees everyday and failed tests mean a two week at home quarantine before coming back to work, put up barriers were needed to reduce interaction (like at cashiers), social distancing as much as is feasible. The vast majority of life-essential businesses (like mine) that have not stopped working since this thing started have been doing these things and have stayed in business with minimal issue. That's 8 weeks we've been operating like this and it works.

Without a vaccine, which we're not getting tomorrow, this is going to be how we're going to operate for the next 12-18 months. There is no reason why everyplace can't operate this way too. That needs to be the message. Governor Wolf in PA just extended the shelter in place warning for most of the state until June 4th. Why? No reason, just an abundance of caution. And that's in a state where roughly 70% of all deaths have been in isolated nursing homes or other care facilities. We know who are at risk, we know how to mitigate that risk and how to let the rest move on, so now's the time to do that. The message needs to change from the fear porn that is real to instead a rational, objective approach to how to move forward in a world where we need to mitigate the risk where we know what to do - let's start doing it.

I watched PBS during the last election night. It was the most boring, stale, unimaginative broadcast I think I've ever seen. And it was wonderful compared to watching the partisan crap that's so over the top anymore. And yes, I happened to see MSNBC and I thought it was far tamer and less nuts than CNN is.

Well, there's no need to bring back kids now - it's May 8th, most schools are done in early June, so there's nothing to be gained by going back now.

With that said, I saw Greece, Greece of all places, is set to bring back kids next week. This is more of the message problem - we have to be more focused on what to do to move on and adapt to the new reality rather than cowering in our houses and saying we can't come out until we make sure not a single life if lost if we do come out. There is way too much collateral damage out there right now to continue - again, the medical industry is being pummeled - we're laying off ER doctors during a pandemic. It's crazy. Get this right, figure out how to get people back to work (and again, we've known how to do this for more than a month now) and protect the real threatened parts of the population, and get on with it.

Good for the people that don't want to and should not get sick, but there are a lot of people that don't care if they get sick or not, because they will survive it. They should just be allowed to do what the want, as long as they don't infringe on the vulnerable people. Cautious return to normalcy.

That's not going to work well with kindergartners. We're thinking about homeschooling LilCCU if it comes to that.

I've only been to Hamilton 3 times, which does put me into rarified company. I still like to boast that I saw the original Broadway cast (mins Lin and Chris Jackson who were off that night) from the center of the front row. The fact that we're being so immensely disruptive to kids (no school, no sports, no clubs, no socializing in person with other friends) for a virus that has such a miniscule impact on them might be one of the biggest issues of how we've responded to this pandemic. Like I posted in another post from the BBC, statistically the impact this virus has on kids under 25 is so low that it gets lost in the data of the other stuff they are really in danger of. IMO, get them back in school, they can wear masks when in school, maybe have them eat lunch in the classrooms rather than the cafeteria (although frankly unless we're going to disinfect the classroom prior to eating that may actually make it worse), but otherwise let them continue on as they always have. Full school, full sports, full clubs, socialize however they want, etc.
