I learned last weekend that my aunt has recovered from COVID-19. When I asked how do they think she got it, I learned that she contracted it from her 2 daughters...who in their wisdom decided to go to NYC in March. Right around the time things were closing so they can take advantage of small crowds. I get the one is an idiot. But the other knows better. The other owns several health care start ups. So they go to NYC, catch the virus, return to Virginia Beach and give it to their mother and the 2 children.

Idiots.

But if you have a 95% confidence interval (which is what people usually have by convention in statistics) you expect the actual value to be outside of the interval in about 1 in every 20 cases.

If Joe Blow off the street did that I could believe he didn't know better. But that author knows better than to do what they did. I suspect you are dealing with an intellectually dishonest person.
So locking down young people and sending Covid-19 patients to nursing homes was the right call?

Sweden has Scandinavian discipline and small village/easy to track and trace culture on their side and they are still not slowing it down. In fact, their numbers at this point are by far the worst among Nordic countries. The health official who created the national plan is now having second thoughts.

If they plateau and then recede over the next couple of months, that would be great news but I think there’s a decent chance that herd immunity will be as useful as calling it “the flu.”

Here in VA, tomorrow we are under orders from the Governor to begin to wear facemarks in public places. Our Governor is a MD.

My question is, if facemarks are important to maintaining our health, why does it take an MD 3 months to learn that? Could it be about something other than health?

Yes. The picture that has circulated of Governor Klans Robe Blackface is actually from his Medical School yearbook...

The Progressive Democrat top 3 officers in Virginia are the Governor, Dr. KRB; Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax, who has had multiple women accuse him of unwanted/forced sexual encounters; and Attorney General Mark Herring, who has also admitted to appearing in black face. All 3 are progressive Democrats. The news on this dissipated faster than it came up in press reports.

Fair and unbalanced press coverage, since the press has learned its' lesson from the Brent Kavanaugh confirmation hearings not to be too hasty or too virulent in reporting on indiscretions of privileged young men.

I posted the article because it made some interesting points and shows that not all the experts and doctors agree with the aggressive measures. Would more people have lived in the US if we had not locked down everything but instead focused on nursing homes and encouraging the most at-risk and elderly to voluntarily lockdown (and focused our financial aid on those areas)?

Perhaps. Much arm chair quarterbacking will come from this. I agree that the article raises some interesting points.

Another thing to consider is the asymptomatic rate. Last I saw it was around 35%. Even though the hospitalization rate is obviously lower, that’s still potentially a big economic hit to the economy if you account for lost time at work for recovery and quarantine.

Fuck it! We’re done with this. Let’s just reopen.

“Intensive care units in Montgomery, Ala., are overflowing with Covid-19 patients, pushing them into emergency departments that are not primed to care for them. And Alabama’s capital city could be a harbinger for other parts of the country.

ICU beds are also starting to fill up in places like Minnesota’s Twin Cities; Omaha, Neb.; and the entire state of Rhode Island, according to local health officials and epidemiologists tracking such data, a warning sign of possible health care problems down the road. The availability of ICU beds is one measure of a hospital’s ability to care for its most vulnerable patients — people with severe illness who require more staff to treat them and may need life-support equipment such as a ventilator to breathe. And it's served as a metric for whether the local health care system is able to handle a coronavirus outbreak, albeit a constantly shifting one.”
