I could read this part, seems like a good start
Hold officers accountable who use excessive force.
Long article, but read this if you actually care about the above;

Be prepared to break public service unions to do so.

I’m all for it

But we’ll need to bust ALL public service unions to do it. And blue city mayors will have to lead the charge

And then a 110,000 salary will bop on down to around 50k in Minneapolis. We’ll probably want to drop the college requirements at that point. And city residency requirements

Good luck

Demilitarize the police and put the money towards the salary reduction. $110k seems really fucking high anyway (double the median income).

Also doesn't seem like the kind of job that should require a college degre (looks like Minneapolis just requires an associates). Fine with doing away with that. But, maintain a fine line and strict discipline.

Agree on demilitarizing and probably defunding to an extent as well.

Totally disagree on Ed requirements. Minimum 4 year degree with heavy doses of philosophy and psych.

There are some terrific cops out there without those things but I’m not sure there are enough. It’s a pretty fucking important job.

I think we ought to have every police officer in America stand down for about a week and do a good purge. :kisswink:

There are also some good cops with military service but no college so college or military service.

Pay cops less and it might attract more of the bullies who use the badge as a shield and fewer of the people dedicated to the profession. You could have more of these incidents not less. Paying cops less while demanding $15/hour for the teenager asking if you want fries with that also seems backward to me.

I think the pay should be high, but the job should require a four year degree.

I'd also take away their firearms except for specialized units, and train them extensively in deescalation techniques and the use of nonlethal weapons. Additionally, there need to be state or national licensure programs, with continuing education requirements towards the license. This is in-line with the demands of other professions, and those careers don't usually hold life-and-death in their hands.

The demilitarization is a no-brainer.

LAWL

It was professionalization efforts over the last 20 years that have produced all of those things

Led by blue mayors and governors

And cheer-leaded by police reformers everywhere

But yeah

Lower pay (given the hazards) and less education will fetch us EXACTLY the kind of nobles we need in Scotland

No firearms = no cops

We have guns in this country

As for the other stuff - everything you described already exists through the majority of our urban police departments

I'm cool with local police not having guns.

Have a couple SWAT teams if you need to match force.

Definitely demilitarize them and not give them stuff they will want to use because they can. Baton, pepper spray, handcuffs and a tazer is all the average cop needs.

I was pulled over last year. I didn't have proof of insurance and the cop said, " You're good. I'm sure you have it" and let me off with a warning.

I'm positive if I weren't a white man, there would've been a different ending. I recognize that I probably got preferential treatment b/c I'm white. I'm not going to apologize for it. Nor am I going to go into every interaction thinking, " how am I benefiting from this based on my race?".
I’ve watched several seasons of Live PD, mostly red state departments, and have seen lots of people on traffic stops, including blacks, get off with warnings, or not getting a ticket for every violation (esp those who were somewhat respectful).
Oh, then racism is solved. My bad.

They already don’t respond to 90% of routine calls for service.

And probably for good reason. Just check out neighborhood.com and you’ll see why.

Front door cam of suspicious mini van gets posted. “Anyone seen this van? They’re driving slow and casing houses I’m sure of it! I’ve already called crime check!”

“Yeah that was me, we’re looking for our lost cat”.

Or

People come up with the strangest idea's and you just don't know where they are coming from until you hear them out. I unknowingly, was thought to be a stalker one day at work. I arrived early and was in my car, listening to the radio waiting for the bus to come. There was a lady that I noticed walked by the first bus stop to the one by the next parking lot. Yes I work for a large company that runs buses to their parking lots. The bus came, and I'm not thinking about the lady, until we pick her up at the next bus stop. She tells the bus driver that there is a man sitting in a car and she thinks he's a stalker. I spoke up and said that was me and I was early, and listening to the radio. She was embarrassed and explained that she had been stalked in the past. If I had waited for the next bus, I may have been arrested for doing nothing but getting to work early.

Well, maybe out where you live where it takes a 24 hr stagecoach to get anywhere

But in cities (those are large collections of buildings and people in a concentrated area), police generally have a policy of responding to all calls for service.

At least we did in Charleston. Yankee unionized police departments might not

I have smart color bulbs around my home. Around a year ago, a mom knocked on my door...said she lived in the neighborhood (I had never seen her before) and that her child was afraid of my house when the bulbs were set to red...something about monsters.

So instead of teaching her daughter that red light =/= monsters, she decided to police what I did in my home.

I'm not about terrifying little kids, so I did agree...but definitely made it known to her that this was a parenting issue. She got annoyed at that and no doubt bitched to the rest of the Karens on neighborhood.com about my attitude even though I was willing to play along.

edit: I definitely want to know what goes through the mind of someone who marries these people and decided, "yeah this is the one." Although I suppose people do change over time. Regardless, I feel bad for the person coming home to that every day.

Couple of Useless Trivia notes on George Floyd's Killer - Derek Chauvin

Chauvin went to the same High School at the same time as Sean Williams Scott, but were not in the same grade. Stiffler in American Pie
Chauvin is in the same prison that Cole, Jim and Bob Younger were sent to after the James Gang debacle in Northfield, MN, however the location of the Stillwater prison has moved.

   I had a neighbor take offense with my "Fuck Cancer" tshirt. I was wearing it in my home. She told me she didn't appreciate it b/c where she comes from in Ohio, "Fuck" means "rape." I told her that was ridiculous and I will continue to wear what I want in my house. If she has a problem with it, she can leave.

Actually, I'd say about 1/10 people that see me wearing my "Fuck Cancer" shirt have a problem with it.
