May sees biggest jobs increase ever of 2.5 million as economy starts to recover from coronavirus
Employment stunningly rose by 2.5 million in May and the jobless rate declined to 13.3%, according to data Friday from the Labor Department that was far better than economists had been expecting and indicated that an economic turnaround could be close at hand.
Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting payrolls to drop by 8.33 million and the unemployment rate to rise to 19.5% from April’s 14.7%. If Wall Street expectations had been accurate, it would have been the worst figure since the Great Depression.
As it turned out, May’s numbers showed the U.S. may well be on the road to recovery after its fastest plunge in history.

Yep. CNN was so pissed at the great job news that they couldn't even bring themselves to cover it.

How in the hell do the experts predict 9 million job losses, only to see us add 2.5 million.
How in the hell are they 11.5 million jobs off?!?
Are they not the "experts"?

Page 6:In the household survey, individuals are classified as employed, unemployed, or not in the labor force based on their answers to a series of questions about their activities during the survey reference week (May 10th through May 16th). Workers who indicate they were not working during the entire survey reference week and expect to be recalled to their jobs should be classified as unemployed on temporary layoff.
In May, a large number of persons were classified as unemployed on temporary layoff. However, there was also a large number of workers who were classified as employed but absent from work. As was the case in March and April, household survey interviewers were instructed to classify employed persons absent from work due to coronavirus-related business closures as unemployed on temporary layoff.
However, it is apparent that not all such workers were so classified. BLS and the Census Bureau are investigating why this misclassification error continues to occur and are taking additional steps to address the issue.
If the workers who were recorded as employed but absent from work due to "other reasons" (over and above the number absent for other reasons in a typical May) had been classified as unemployed on temporary layoff, the overall unemployment rate would have been about 3 percentage points higher than reported (on a not seasonally adjusted basis).
However, according to usual practice, the data from the household survey are accepted as recorded. To maintain data integrity, no ad hoc actions are taken to reclassify survey responses.

Well that’s just stupid. 22% of our workforce was employed (and paid) but home, NOT working. You’re telling me those folks should count as “unemployed”?

Where does it say they were paid?
Sounds like, for example, servers still employed by a restaurant, but not getting paid because the restaurant isn't open.

Well if they aren’t getting paid, they aren’t employed. Pretty much how that works.Skjellyfetti wrote: ↑Fri Jun 05, 2020 12:12 pm Where does it say they were paid?

https://www.google.com/amp/s/fortune.co ... s-faq/amp/In short, a furlough is an unpaid leave of absence. While furloughed employees still technically retain their jobs, the furlough itself means that they cease working for their employers and do not earn a salary. The idea is that this is a temporary arrangement, and workers will one day be able to return to their jobs.

Today’s a great day for a man who was murdered last week by the police.
Not sure how that makes sense but ok

Re: The Official
No, I understood the context. Still not sure how good job numbers make it a great day for a murdered man. That logic makes zero sense. Perhaps you'll have to walk me through that.
Or just promote good numbers and not to try to tie in a murder into.

Re: The Official
You apparently didn't listen/read the whole clip, because I know you are smarter than believing Trump threw in a line about Floyd being happy over a good jobs report.
The Washington Post even issued a correction. Below is the section about Floyd.
"Equal justice under the law must mean that every American receives equal treatment in every encounter with law enforcement regardless of race, color, gender, or creed," Trump said. "They have to receive fair treatment from law enforcement. They have to receive it. We all saw what happened last week. We can't let that happen."
He continued, "Hopefully, George is looking down right now and saying, 'This is a great day that's happening for our country.' It's a great day for him. It's a great day for everybody. This is a great day for everybody. This is a great day in terms of equality. It's really what our Constitution requires and it's what our country is all about."
