Tons Lebanese citizens - possibly most - even want to open up relations with Israel. Lebanese LOVE the west (clothing, movies, music, etc.) in no small part to its French connection and large number of diaspora in the West. If there are two countries closest aligned with the West - culturally speaking - it's Israel and Lebanon.

But in the 80s the Christian militias and the Muslim militias all seemed about evenly matched, so there is definitely no huge majority/minority. But I’m just guessing based on my own take without looking it up

It's slightly majority Muslim (maybe 55%-40% with 5% being other). That said, there's been a huge influx of refugees due to the Syrian War so the Muslim population has ballooned as a whole.

You and I say “refugees”

Iran says “recruits”

Can't disagree. As we know, the entire Middle East is Saudi Arabia and Iran's playground.

There has also been a big influx of Iranian cash (until the last few months) supporting the Shia militias...

One of my cousin's homes is completely destroyed on the inside though. He lives high up in a skyscraper so there was little in the way to dampen the shock wave. Most my family doesn't live close to the port, but they sent us pics of their neighborhood and the streets were littered with glass, concrete, signage, light posts, wires, condensing units, and dry blood.

The Lebanese gov't is a complete shit show and has been for a while.

My Lebanese friend's buddy was in that tall apartment building just to the right of the fire, FACING the fire....standing on his patio videoing when the blast happened. He's in the hospital now with a broken leg, multiple cuts and lacerations, and both he and his girlfriend had the skin shaved off their bodies/arm/leg on the side that was facing the blast...like down to the bone

You've never heard of the great OF Beirut Lebanon? Led the Yankees to 5 World Series titles. Joltin' Joe cries that he is not in the hall of fame.

Oh, THAT Beirut Lebanon. Not to be confused with the great, much-overlooked Yankee third baseman Hamas Hezbollah, who hit 40 dingers back in ‘98.

I just showed my kids that movie a few weeks ago - still holds up. You can't help but tear up a little bit when he comes out in the second half with his white shoes. :thumb:

I was driving my oldest to college visits last week or I would've seen your post earlier - sorry to make you think that no one remembers a quality movie like that.
