Protesters are on to something here - it is mayors, city councils, and city managers who are ultimately to blame for police departments that cannot get rid of their bad eggs. And - they are the ones who push for “quality of life” policing and all the other Mickey Mouse shit that police are asked to do, which ultimately results in unnecessary encounters with minority populations.

Now these mayors and councilcritters are reaping what they have sown.

It is a dumb debate to begin with. Looting is as much a part of warfare as shooting. It has happened in every war in history and will happen in every war in the future. Some of it sanctioned, some of it is not (straggling, bummers). It is even lawful in warfare.

But drawing some kind of nexus between the foraging of an army on foot and civilians looting other civilians during civil unrest is a dumb debate

We're not at war. The mayor of Portland and DA need to step up and do something - establish a curfew, give the police a longer leash and actually prosecute rioters and looters.
