Recent commentary from the World Health Organization's (WHO) special envoy on COVID-19 has sparked questions about the legitimacy of lockdowns to stop the spread of coronavirus.

"We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus."

This statement from Dr David Nabarro has also prompted questions about whether the WHO has backflipped on its advice, months after the pandemic was declared.

Dr Nabarro told The Spectator the economic impact on small countries that rely on tourism and increased poverty levels are two major effects of shutting communities down.

"We really do appeal to all world leaders, stop using lockdown as your primary method of control," he said.

"Lockdowns have just one consequence that you must never ever belittle, and that is making poor people an awful lot poorer."

Of course they do.

Here in CA deaths have been in a steady decline (7 day avg) since the peak in early Aug. Cases have flat lined since about Sept 12. But yeah CA should stay locked down or something. :dunce:

For starters, deaths are up and Covid deaths have probably been under-counted. :suspicious:
Lol. Deaths FROM covid or deaths WITH covid? :coffee:

California is easing its coronavirus restrictions to allow up to three households to socialize outdoors, an expansion of rules aimed at people tempted to have even larger gatherings around Halloween, Thanksgiving and end-of-year holidays, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday.

Three households can gather so long as they wear masks and follow other safety precautions designed to stem the spread of the virus, under the new guidelines from the California Department of Public Health. State health officials previously discouraged gatherings outside of a single household.

Meanwhile dumbass jellybelly will tell us that CA has "loosened restrictions". :dunce:

BTW, anyone thinking that a Brown state like CA is going to limit family gatherings to 3 households is :dunce: :dunce: :dunce:

Things going bad in Europe right now, first time since earlier in the year that the EU has more COVID positive cases than the US. France has a curfew from 9PM to 6AM in most places and have banned really any groups for at least the next 4 weeks. Northern Ireland is closing schools for 4 weeks. Even Germany is seeing rises and now contemplating next steps. Not pretty over there. Debate over lockdowns happening again. I think the UK is promising 2/3 of the wages of people who are laid off during this time.

Makes a lot more sense (with an upper limit cutoff) than the US paying $600 a week (or later $300) on top of state unemployment, so you have a lot of people making more more to stay at home, some making less, a few way less...

Do you remember way back in March when they told us not to freak out once we get testing ramped up? Well, you've freaked out.

Anyway, Z is right. COVID has found most of it's victims, as evidenced by the positives in testing starting to settle in around 5% and the declining death rate.

Still want to know what is being measured as a case. CDC is pretty clear, but can't seem to locate it in the NYT coverage.
No. I remember increased testing as another important tool in the kit.

I’m freaking out because we could be in such better shape right now but we’re too selfish and stupid.

Covid has found most of its victims according to who? We are around 5% which is good. Summer and increased mask wearing and temporary restrictions even in places like Florida and Texas helped as predicted. Epidemiologists say we need to get below 5 and consistently stay below it. Places like the NW and PNW, ND, Montana, Idaho have inched back up after weathering the initial assault. Europe is now once again leading the continents in new cases.

Regarding death rates...we suck. Funny how it’s the same people in March, calling it the flu and preaching zero restrictions who are still beating those drums. ‘What’s a few hundred thousand more deaths and grandma staying locked up for life? It’s run it’s course... I want the old days back.’

“If the coronavirus death rate in the United States were similar to that of Australia, it would have had 187,661 fewer COVID-19 deaths (94% of reported deaths), and, compared with Canada, it would have had 117,622 fewer deaths (59%).”

“The authors concluded that COVID-19 deaths and excess deaths from any cause in the United States likely were due to a poor pandemic response rather than an early surge of coronavirus cases before virus prevention and treatment methods were improved.”

Have of our nation is still responding poorly.

inching back up might be generous. After doing quite well until the last month or so, Montana is now approaching 10%. Billings hospital has started sending patients to the Bozeman hospital.

Clemson son got moved from the dorm to a hotel last night. His roomate's test came back positive after 4 days of symptoms and was sent to a different hotel. Son's most recent test (4th since arriving there a month ago) came up negative again this morning. He has thus far dodged a positive test despite being surrounded by multiple positives.

Are they doing any in-person classes there? I assume that now he's in a hotel he's restricted on what he can do?

The only one he has is a golf class on Tuesdays. (BTW, his professor saw his swing and immediately asked if he was a baseball player  ).

He said the hotel is sweet. TV, fridge, and he doesn't have to climb up to his bed. Food is delivered to his room. Has to spend 10 days there and negative test out.

Yeah, I can't imagine a college kid having a tough time hanging out in a hotel room with a phone and food delivered to him. If he was able to bring in an Xbox or PlayStation he might not ever leave. Of course assuming no negative impacts from Covid, but for his generation that's pretty much the norm.

That's a pretty sweet deal for the student. At Iowa they left a section of a dorm empty and that's where you have to move to if you test positive.

His roomate's test came back positive after 4 days of symptoms and was sent to a different hotel. Son's most recent test (4th since arriving there a month ago) came up negative again this morning. He has thus far dodged a positive test despite being surrounded by multiple positives.
