Really? You view those as “free market” failures? A gigantic power grab is going on in the name of “safety” and “fairness”, and/all dissenters are screamed at and shouted down (and if necessary, their businesses destroyed), and yet that’s somehow the fault of “the free market”?
I’ve said on here many, many times over the years that the quickest way for a politician to lose me and my vote is to claim somehow that if HE/SHE is elected, they’ll “keep Americans safe”. Fuck THAT. You want my vote? Enact policies that make it easier for me to live my life, be successful, and provide for my family. I’ll handle my own safety. And yet, we now have a majority of the people in this country who are standing idly by, willfully allowing (née, BEGGING) the government to swoop in in some misguided belief that the government will “save” them, the government will “keep them safe”, that Trump fucked up with this pandemic, but that someone ELSE in government will “do it right” this time (kind of like Socialism, huh? ).
Here’s a newsflash: The ONLY thing the government is good at is retaining and gaining power. Everything else it touches turns to shit.
Another newsflash: At some point (and I’m not saying it’s imminent), as this hell-bent ride towards socialism and overwhelming government control of and intrusion into our lives continues, freedom-loving Americans are going to reach their boiling point. Better hope you’re on the correct side when that happens.
The Pope (idiot that he is) was right about one thing; Some people DO view “Freedom” as an ideology. It’s what this country was founded and built on. And there are still a lot of people who aren’t willing to just sit idly by and watch it be snatched away in the name of “fairness” and “equality of result” as defined by a government entity.

I have a lot more faith in Adam Smith's invisible hand than I do in the government's overbearing hand. That faith is magnified if government regulations are established by intellectual lightweights like AOC or people with no real experience or understanding of the world outside of DC like Bernie.

Can we list all the “intellectual” heavyweights with shitloads of experience that have fucked the economy at times for average people?

Re: The Media -- Going Forward
Food for thought ... Yes things have changed but have people changed? Has human nature changed? Are people ready to set aside their ambition and competitiveness and put the same effort toward doing what is best for society? That is the step in the evolutionary process that is needed for socialism to succeed and I don't think we've taken it yet. The more power you give to government, the more attractive government work becomes to ambitious and competitive people. Is it better for society for them to work in the public sector or the private sector where they could be creating and leading companies that produce products and services that improve the quality of life for all?kalm wrote: ↑Sat Nov 28, 2020 7:57 amI like Smith too but similar to the constitution, things have changed a bit since The Wealth of Nations.UNI88 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 1:03 pm

Why can’t they work in both?
Why can’t we have ambition, competitiveness, and the moral responsibility to contribute to the greater good? It’s already happening just not enough and we tend to be a little light on the greater good stuff philosophically.
Thanksgiving and church gatherings under Covid are interesting examples.

Call me a cynic but didn't we just have some progressive thought leader turning JFK's words on their head and telling people to ask what the government could do for them?

My bias?
Your words...human nature hasn’t changed enough for people to trusted to do the right thing.
I want as small of a government as possible. Don’t we all? The reality...not enough people can be trusted to even limit their exposure to others during a pandemic (or pay taxes, or drive safely, or call your own fouls in sports). Hence the reality for more government. This is where libertarianism remains a cute story.

Re: The Media -- Going Forward
I support a social safety net. It's a question of how much of a safety net and at what tax rate. IMO, the pre-Trump taxcut tax rate was a pretty good one (with the exception of limiting the ability to write off state & local taxes so residents of low tax states weren't subsidizing the high tax states). If you want the government to do more maybe you should ask the government to more efficiently and effectively use the revenue it is getting before it asks for more. To paraphrase Cleets, the government has a spending problem not an income problem.
And if you're going to point out what you consider the failures of the free market in handling the pandemic then you should also give it credit for creating a vaccine so quickly. I don't think a federal agency could have come close to creating possible vaccines this quickly. Despite the attempts by ctr-left, pseudo-progressives to demonize the marketplace and free enterprise, the profit motive is and will continue to be an incredible incentive for improving humanity's quality of life.
Why bring up the Finns when we're talking about the Scandies. Finland is not Scandanavian. Finns are more closely related to the Maygars of Hungary than they are to Scandanavians. Get your sh!t straight.

“If we circle back to the beginning, just remembering that all five Nordic countries are regular stars at the top of the scale of the World Happiness Report due in large part to their shared values and ways of caring for the lives of their citizens should go a long way toward answering the question is Finland part of Scandinavia:
It sure looks like it is, at least in spirit anyway.
The best answer to the question of why isn’t Finland in Scandinavia may be this: Perhaps it isn’t, not by the strictest definition.
But what’s more important in this day and age is that the long ago dream of solidarity and cooperation among nations like Norway, Sweden and Denmark has been broadened and modernized to accept Finland and Iceland today.
These days, the people of the Scandinavian nations—and more inclusively, the Nordic countries—often see themselves as part of a greater family of people who share common roots, cultures, history and social priorities.
And after all, isn’t that the most important thing?“

And we've come full circle because here is where the pseudo-progressives refuse to understand the yin and yang of America's shared "common roots, cultures, history and social priorities" - compassion/collaboration vs. self-reliance. As a people, Americans place a much higher value on self-reliance and independence than Euros. And our compassion/collaboration has traditionally been voluntary and based at the community level not coerced by the federal government. Forcing a greater social safety net on the country without accounting for this yin and yang is just as foolish and arrogant as conservatives trying to roll back the clock.kalm wrote: ↑Sun Nov 29, 2020 7:38 amYeah, ok, whatever........Mr. Picker of Nits.
