I look at it and just think, man…we can do better.

We can and should do better. How we define better and how we pay for it are the questions.

I would also guess that lifestyle choices play a role in our lower life expectancy. Europe is more compact which enables better public transit and more walking and other activity. I believe Europeans have better dietary habits as well.

Maybe we could cut our overseas military presence, bring the troops home and use the savings to help pay for UHC. Germany and the rest of Europe can deal with Vlad themselves. I would guess that the preaching would be replaced by whining if that were seriously considered. But governments can only print so much money before hard choices have to be made.

Obesity is probably more than all those others put together. Go to those other ‘rich countries’ ie Canada, Western Europe, Australia, New Zeland (I’ve been to all except the Scandanavian) and while you see some overweight and fat people, it is WAY less prevalent than in the US.

All the more need for improved healthcare access and reduction in costs including preventative care like nutrition.

As somebody that has spent months in Europe and other foreign locations, life style choices is the huge difference between them and us. Discussing life expectancy and not including personal life style choices (and why that is different here vs. there) is a false debate. And throwing out the "solution" of UHC and other government sponsored/mandated health care is a good superficial "gotcha".

Brandy Bottone of Plano says she received a citation for driving alone in the two-or-more occupant lane after arguing her fetus should be considered a person.

A pregnant Dallas-area woman argued as much to police officers after recently being cited for driving alone in the HOV lane, according to a story published Friday afternoon by the Dallas Morning News' Dave Lieber.

Lieber reports that Plano resident Brandy Bettone was driving along U.S. Highway 75 en route to picking up her son when she found herself at a checkpoint facing a citation for using the high-occupancy vehicle lane while alone in her car.

"I was driving to pick up my son. I knew I couldn't be a minute late, so I took the HOV lane," Bettone told Lieber. "As I exited the HOV, there was a checkpoint at the end of the exit. I slammed on my brakes and I was pulled over by police."

Bettone said officers asked her if there were any more occupants inside her vehicle. Pregnant with a daughter, Bettone told the officers her unborn child was inside the vehicle with her, according to Lieber.

"I pointed to my stomach and said, 'My baby girl is right here. She is a person,'" Bettone said. However the officers were not buying it. "He said, 'Oh, no. It's got to be two people outside of the body.'"

Bettone spoke with multiple officers over the course of her encounter, she told Lieber. One seemed indifferent, Bettone claimed, while another gave her a citation and told her to challenge it in court to have it thrown out.

"One kind of brushed me off when I mentioned this is a living child, according to everything that's going on with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Ex on an airliner say you have 190 of 200 seats booked (95%). You have 10 lap children (I believe thats under 2 yrs old). That plane I believe is still only 95% occupied. I believe the airline paperwork would list that as 190 passemgers + 10 lap children. Of course the 6/12/18 month olds are living human beings, would count as ‘souls on board’ but as lap children they don’t count towards occupancy.

Course would be nice if we saw how the Texas statue was written, and how it defined ‘Occupancy’ for HOV lanes. But that would be too much to expect from today’s lazy media.

No, I’m looking because sometimes things aren’t as simple as they appear, and legalese matters. I’m pretty sure in Texas if someone murdered a pregnant woman it would, or could be, a charge of killing 2 people.

Dallas appellate lawyer Chad Ruback described the case as "unchartered territory" in a post-Roe country.

"Different judges might treat this differently. This is unchartered territory we're in now," Ruback said, per the report. "There is no Texas statute that says what to do in this situation. The Texas Transportation Code has not been amended recently to address this particular situation. Who knows? Maybe the legislature will in the next session."

Bottone intends to fight the ticket at court date, set for July 20, which is near her due date.
