It was only after Kiev ordered the increased bombing and plans for an invasion of the Donbass (Dec 16, 2021), did Putin recognize them as autonomous eight days later.

Up until that point, Kiev and the US were paying paramilitary to kills the citizens of the Donbass. Russia never intervened.

There's a reason a majority in France and Germany blame the war on the US.

When Putin says so. Zelensky came to the table over a year ago to negotiate, but was told by the US and UK to back away, so he did. Now we see what that got him, hundreds of thousands of young men killed and the loss of any sort of negotiating ability.
