Moving this away from the Funny Pics thread for more serious questions:

What will happen if trump and rightwing social populists win power in the US and Europe?

How will the world change if they and the US implement a (insert country name here) _________ First approach?

On the surface an America First approach sounds really good but socialism sounds really good on the surface as well. The devil's in the details. Much like I ask kalm, Houndy, etc. why socialism will work this time, can a MAQA yahoo tell me why an America First approach with less international involvement, increased tariffs, etc. would be good for the US and the world in the long term?

To me, the situation we face is similar to what happened in the 1920's and 1930's. I see that approach leading to increased tensions and conflicts, decreased trade, lost economic opportunities and jobs, and more lives lost. Why?
  1. Tariffs don't occur in a vacuum. American tariffs alone might lead to more domestic manufacturing but other countries will respond in kind and while US imports will decrease so will exports. In addition, international trade creates connections and dependencies which reduce the likelihood of conflict. Reduced international trade will lead to an increase in international conflicts.
  2. The US pulling back from international involvement will embolden the bullies of the world. putin invading Ukraine won't be an isolated incident. What will China do with Taiwan? In the South China Sea? What will Iran do in the Middle East? What will happen in the Caucasus? The possibility of intervention by the US, the UN, NATO and/or other powerful actors is a deterrent to those bullies taking action. If those countries or leading members of those organizations focus on themselves, that deterrent is removed and there will be more not less conflict.
  3. Eventually those conflicts spread and the US and other nations will be forced to get involved. The loss of life and economic gains will be significantly greater than if the US and other nations had simply stayed involved.
So BDK, CH, SG, etc. tell me why an America First approach with less international involvement, increased tariffs, etc. would be good for the US and the world in the long term?

I'm interested in everyone else's thoughts on this as well (especially CID, he can DM me if he's lurking and doesn't want to post).
Good post and for the record ( again)I’m not a socialist. I’m an American who thinks capitalism should be fairly regulated and that a “free market” anywhere is a unicorn. I think Houndy agrees.
I do. And I don't recall 88 ever asking me the question he mentions either. (What does "why socialism will work this time" even mean? Making fire departments more efficient?)

1st of all, the what you call ‘rightwing social populists’ surging in popularity in Europe is more due to unchecked illegal immigration, not tariffs or treaties.

But as far a tariffs and treaties:
No one is talking about tariffs on all countries. But when a country:
1.Has a major trade surplus with the US.
2.Puts tariffs on US goods.
3.Manipulates their currency.
4.Conducts state sanctioned economic espionage and intellectual property theft on a GINORMOUS scale.
5.Allowed a lab created virus to escape to the rest of the world that cost our economy trillions.
You don’t think the US should put tariffs on that country’s goods? :suspicious:

Fine with the US having international involvement. But the US shouldn’t be involved in, or fund endless foreign wars (Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine) absent a clear, direct threat to the US (not a speculative one). Russia/Ukraine isn’t one. China/Taiwan is (chips). US hould not be the world’s policeman or defense piggy bank. Should only participate in treaties with countries that pull their own weight. The US shouldn’t disproportionately fund fellow members defense. The US taxpayers have subsidized most of Western Europe’s social safety net for 70 years by providing a disproportionate amount of their defense. And should never spend more for defending another countries borders than our own. Absolute disaster on the US border now. The last 3 ICE/CBP budgets have been south of 70 billion..Since Feb 2022 5 Ukaraine bills have totaled about 175 billion… Something majorly wrong there.
Reportedly, your god emperor is talking about tariffs on all countries.

Trump’s $300 Billion Tax Hike Would Threaten U.S. Businesses and Consumers
Former President Donald Trump’s proposed 10 percent tariff would raise taxes on American consumers by more than $300 billion a year—a tax increase rivaling the ones proposed by President Biden. If implemented, the significant trade tax hike would trigger retaliatory tax increases on U.S. exports.

Who tried to steal the 2020 election?

7 Washington County residents sue elections board alleging they didn't let them fix mail-in ballot mistakes
According to the lawsuit, the board’s decision to not notify voters of those mistakes constitutes a violation of the state Constitution because it does not allow due process for Washington County voters. That included notifying whether they had forgotten to sign their ballots or had omitted or put in an incorrect date, the suit stated.

“Instead, in the weeks leading up to the April 2024 election, the Board determined which mail-in ballots would not be counted, and then implemented a systematic process to keep that information from voters and the public, in many cases affirmatively misleading voters into thinking that their mail-in ballots would be counted. ... Due process is not a choice: the Pennsylvania Constitution demands it,” according to the lawsuit.

Washington County, in far SW PA, is a red county- went 61-38 Trump.

So what? Just because the county board didn't need to disenfranchise voters doesn't mean they weren't stupid enough to do it.

Do you tell CH that NYC and other cities are blue country and there is no need for illegal immigrants to vote there when he makes his claims?

Could it be that voters are rejecting parties in power regardless of ideology?

If newly elected majorities take their election as a popular mandate will they be kicked to the curb in a couple of years for overstepping their bounds?

Not really. Labor rights and economics poll progressive in most places as do environmental concerns. Political outcomes do not always coincide with the will of the common man however there’s a limit to how much they will tolerate.

‘The claims are just outrageous’: Republican ex-governor condemns Arizona election lies
Why speak out now?
We’re hearing these conspiracies, as far as I’m concerned, about elections being stolen, and it was wrong, and that there were terrible things taking place at the polls, and it just went on and on and on. As the prior chief of elections, I knew the procedures that are taken to prevent that. We wrote the election procedure manual. We did the [logic and accuracy] tests. It just was undermining our democracy. And I thought, well, somebody needs to stand up. Other people have stood up too, but I stood up and said a few things, and all of a sudden, everybody kind of listened. These false claims, widespread voter fraud, it just absolutely erodes our elections, and it undermines our democracy.

To be clear, do you think the 2020 election was stolen?
No.

And you have faith in how things are running in Arizona at this time?
There’s always been hiccups, but never to the extent of changing the numbers on the election. I mean, we’ve seen it over and over again, but you’re dealing with human error, you’re dealing with sometimes equipment error, but usually it is rectified immediately, and you can take care of it.

Why do you think doubting election results has become such a sticking point, especially for Republicans in recent years? Why is it still lingering?
Well, I think because they want to win. They want to be the winner, so if they can’t win the election, then they want to say that it was stolen from them. I don’t know, you’d have to ask them why they do it. I just believe that we just need to defend our electoral system, it’s as simple as that, from distrust. We need to speak up, and our politicians need to speak up, and whether it’s left or right, sowing that kind of mistrust and doubt is not good – it’s not good for us, it’s not good for the people out there running, it’s not good for the United States. It certainly is not good for free and fair and democratic elections.
Well said.

There are rational Republicans out there looking out for the good of the country rather than attempting to protect fragile egos. True leaders who are American patriots defend our system rather than attack it.

The champagne was on ice at the far-right National Rally's (RN) headquarters, but the celebratory mood swiftly turned to disbelief when the first projected results from Sunday's parliamentary election appeared on TV screens.

For days, Marine Le Pen had confidently predicted that her party would triumph with an outright majority and her protege Jordan Bardella would be prime minister. Instead, the National Rally was on course to come third, behind a left-wing alliance and President Emmanuel Macron's centrist bloc.
