Pastor: The blasphemous GOP push for religion in public schools | Opinion
If the governor of Florida can, by the power not vested in him, unilaterally declare that the church of Satan isn’t a religion, then he can also wake up one morning and decide that Islam isn’t a religion, or Hinduism, or Catholicism or any faith that allows women to preach or doesn’t handle snakes.

The point of the separation of church and state, as any fourth grader with a reasonably competent history teacher can tell you, isn’t to limit a citizen’s ability to practice their faith, but to protect it.

I do not want DeSantis to be able to decide what is and isn’t a religion. For an agent of the American government to seize this kind of power is incredibly ironic, since this is precisely the kind of oppression that some European Christians were fleeing when they settled in the “New World.” It wasn’t that they were prohibited from being Christians, it was that their government had declared that their understanding of Christianity wasn’t a legitimate religion.

I pastor a church and we don’t display the Ten Commandments on any of our walls. Because honestly, it’s a kind of idolatry. It’s tempting to conflate displaying the commandments with keeping them, but nothing could be further from reality.

The sacredness of these or any words of scripture comes in the messy, sacrificial practice of living them out in community and discerning together how God is calling us to keep them. This is work for a voluntarily formed faith community, not a government institution. I want my daughter’s math instructor to teach her how to do quadratic equations, not how to honor her father and mother.

All these men believe they are doing the Lord’s work, but they really haven’t thought it through. I know they don’t want someone like me teaching students how to interpret scripture. Because I’d teach the kindergartners that all people are created in the image of God and must be treated with reverence and respect. I’d teach the fifth graders that God is as much female as male and that God hates the patriarchy and all systems of oppression. I’d teach the middle schoolers that Jesus and the prophets saw amassing wealth and the pursuit of power as the worst kinds of sin and idolatry. And I’d teach high schoolers about restorative justice and God’s preferential option for the poor. Because that’s how I read the gospel.

I know Landry, DeSantis and Walters don’t want me and a Bible anywhere near their children, and I don’t want them and their Bibles anywhere near mine.
But, but, but, their bible is better than yours.

I wonder what the percentage is of:
- ministers/religious representatives who have sexually assaulted a minor?
- LGBTQ+ who have sexually assaulted a minor?

Maybe MAQA yahoos are looking for groomers in the wrong places.

This is the driving force behind MAGA, Josh Hawley types, and SCOTUS majority. A minority of weirdos who crave power and dominion over others in the (misunderstood) name of Jeebus.

Que SG whining about being judged.

Republicans Let Archbishop With Horrific History Open the RNC

Jerome Listecki, Robert Morris, etc. ... are we sure trump isn't enabling rather than fighting a cabal of pedophiles?
In 2010, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Listecki claimed there wasn’t enough evidence to conduct a church investigation into a La Crosse-area priest who had reportedly been following little boys into water park restrooms—though there was apparently plenty of evidence to criminally investigate that priest, as he was later charged with possession of child pornography.

That same year, Listecki reportedly allowed two retired clergy members who had played prominent roles in the national sex abuse cover-up—Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee and Daniel Pilarczyk of Cincinnati—to lead local liturgies.

When pressed by the Wisconsin Radio Network on why he permitted the members’ continued involvement in the church, Listecki said that Weakland, who had admitted to concealing the rape and molestation of children, should still be celebrated despite being a “lightning rod” within the religious institution.

“Having said that, you know you do talk to some people who talk about some of the good things that he has done,” Listecki told the radio news outlet. “Now, certainly, those good things, a pall is cast upon them because of the direction and leadership he’s given in this area.”

Also in 2010, Listecki took the cover-up a step further, opposing legislation that would have lifted the statute of limitations on sex abuse crimes. He alleged that doing so would bankrupt the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

This could go in a number of threads.

The revenge of the nerds and its embrace of techno-authoritarianism.
Yarvin, a self-described reactionary and extremist who was 35 years old at the time, clarified that he was “just kidding.” But then he continued, “The trouble with the biodiesel solution is that no one would want to live in a city whose public transportation was fueled, even just partly, by the distilled remains of its late underclass. However, it helps us describe the problem we are trying to solve. Our goal, in short, is a humane alternative to genocide.”

He then concluded that the “best humane alternative to genocide” is to “virtualize” these people: Imprison them in “permanent solitary confinement” where, to avoid making them insane, they would be connected to an “immersive virtual-reality interface” so they could “experience a rich, fulfilling life in a completely imaginary world.”

Yarvin’s disturbing manifestos have earned him influential followers, chief among them: tech billionaire Peter Thiel and his onetime Silicon Valley protégé Senator J.D. Vance, whom the Republican Party just nominated to be Donald Trump’s vice president. If Trump wins the election, there is little doubt that Vance will bring Yarvin’s twisted techno-authoritarianism to the White House, and one can imagine—with horror—what a receptive would-be autocrat like Trump might do with those ideas.

Trump’s first campaign was undoubtedly a watershed moment for authoritarianism in American politics, but some thinkers on the right had been laying the groundwork for years, hoping for someone to mainstream their ideas. Yarvin was one of them. Way back in 2012, in a speech on “How to Reboot the US Government,” he said, “If Americans want to change their government, they’re going to have to get over their dictator phobia.” He had also written favorably of slavery and white nationalists in the late 2000s (though he has stated that he is not a white nationalist himself).

Both Thiel and Vance are friends of Yarvin. In The Contrarian: Peter Thiel and Silicon Valley’s Pursuit of Power, reporter Max Chafkin describes Yarvin as the “house political philosopher” of the “Thielverse,” a term for the people in Thiel’s orbit. In 2013, Thiel invested in Tlön, a software startup co-founded by Yarvin. In 2016, Yarvin attended Thiel’s election night party in San Francisco where, according to Chafkin, champagne flowed once it became clear that Thiel’s investment in Donald Trump would pay off.

Since entering politics, Vance has publicly praised—and parroted—Yarvin’s ideas. That was worrying enough when Vance was only a senator. Now that he could soon be a heartbeat away from the presidency, his close ties to Yarvin are more alarming than ever. Superficial analyses of why certain tech billionaires are aligning with Trump tend to fixate on issues like taxes and regulations, but that’s only part of the story. Tech plutocrats like Thiel and Elon Musk already have money. Now they want power—as much as money can buy.
