98000 in Greeley alone....Oh, I forgot...they'd all rather go watch CSU and how convenient you're willing to count DII games for your arguments sake...do you seriously think Montana has one college btw, little ol' Carroll College averages just under 6,000 a game....keep the excuses coming!Jibjab wrote:

So by your calculations there are 4,871,200 left in state to attend a UNC game? Well last time I checked there I don't think there was 4,871,200 with in driving distance, about 1 hour, it would get kinda congested with all those people living in one spot close to UNC. Who knew 4,871,200 would have nothing else to do, because ever single one of those 4,871,200 revolves around football.
Like the person posted earlier people travel across Montana to see a UM game because, for one they're good and two that's the only thing going on in the state of Montana. My guess is no one is going to travel more than 2 hours to see a UNC game when they have other options. YOu know? I don't think it would matter how good they were either

Winning cures everything. I think the main point was that it is all relative. Colorado has 6X the amount of people that Montana does and yes there are many FBS and lower division schools that people can go to on Saturday. However, there are other teams in Montana also. MSU get 11-13k for their home games, Carroll College averages 5k+ for their home games and there are other NAIA schools that receive support from fans. You can't look down on a state because there are not a lot of FBS schools (like they are the only ones that matter).BigSkyBears wrote:In 2005, or 2004 we averaged over 7,000. Not bad, but not great. End result...winning cures a lot of ills

I'm not discounting the fact that we do have more population, but I do think a lot of Griz fans don't appreciate the fact that you're the ONLY ticket in town. That's a great advantage. Also, with regards to the population in Greeley. It is growing but believe me, there's tons of CSU alums in the area. We have a lot of Ag jobs in Weld County and the CSU graduates end up in those positions.
I agree that winning cures everything. As I mentioned before, in 2004 our first year in D1 we averaged 7000 people at Nottingham. Three years of 1 win seasons and one year of 3 wins isn't going to help any program. The community support is there, we're averaging over 2,000 for B-ball.

It also takes longer to turn over a D2 football rosters to a FCS football roster than a D2 basketball roster to a D1 basketball roster.

You get 2500-3000 fans out of a leftover population that is nearly 5 times as big as our entire state as far as population goes?
Is it possible that people are not interested in seeing your team play because they are just not interesting to watch? Seriously, if you could notch up the amount of people that wanted to watch a game in your stadium to say---.00266874692 of those 4.8 million leftovers then you wouldn't have to try to make excuses that are so **** stupid.

Let me break something down for you Montana folk, see the culture in Colorado is a lot different Montana. Bigger city folk, lets say from the Denver metro area, think that driving 20 minutes to get something is a pain in the ass. See I grew up in the sticks, so driving an hour or more isn't a big deal. So ya there's people that would not drive an hour to see a UNC game, you know life's a little different outside the walls of Montana.Ursus A. The point is, is that you could throw out all the population numbers you want, but it doesn't mean jack. Like I said the culture is different in Colorado that Montana. Anybody can pretty much watch what they want on TV, so what's your point? I'll agree that interest plays a big part in having good fan attendance. Someone said earlier that UNC had better numbers when they were D2, well because they were more successful, now they aren't and those numbers have gone down big time. What if Greeley was the only town north of Denver and Denver was 4 hours away? You think more fans would go to UNC games? I think so. Kinda like with Missoula, there isn't much else to do beside to go to a UM football game. Now I'm not saying that the success of their football program there doesn't have anything to do with it, it does. The fact that Missoula is kinda isolated helps out a bunch and being one of the only big time football programs in the state with a lot tradition does to. UNC could win a couple national titles and some people that lived in Greeley would probably still go shopping at the Flat Irons mall in Denver on Saturday. Not only because its some else to do but that's the type of culture in CO. Call it excuses or whatever you want homeboy, I don't give a fizzuck.Ursus A. Griz ink Oregon football transfer
by: Dave Guffey of UM Sports Information
Thursday, 2/4/2010 Updated: 2/4/2010 5:17 PM
The University of Montana has added a defensive player to its 2010 roster, as former University of Oregon defensive lineman Tonio Celotto has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Grizzlies, announced UM head coach Robin Pflugrad today.
Celotto (pronounced cell-ah-toe), a 6-2 ½ , 305-pound defensive tackle, played for the Ducks in 2007 and 2008. He played in 24 games his two seasons in Eugene, and had 36 tackles and 5.5 stops for losses. He played in 12 games as a "true" freshman in 2007 and also played in 12 contests the following season.
From Oakland, Calif., he earned three-star acclaim by both Rivals.com and Scout.com and was ranked among the top 12 defensive linemen in California as a senior by SuperPrep. He was credited with 87 tackles, including 18 quarterback sacks as a senior at Piedmont, Calif. His junior year he posted 75 tackles and 14 sacks.
His parents are Mario Celotto and Julia Lendl-Celotto of Piedmont. He will major in political science at UM. His birth date is Aug. 22, 1989. His dad, Mario, played linebacker in the NFL for four seasons with the Raiders, Bills, and Rams and played his college football at USC.
Tonio will join the Grizzlies in fall camp this August and will be a junior. He did not participate in football in 2009.

Yes, some would. Life doesn't revolve around college football here assface. It's a different culture.
which is kinda the point I was making in the first place.
Who's to say ones culture is better than the other? Just because college football isn't a big deal here in Colorado, doesn't make it less of a place than Montana.

P.S --> I guess since there is so little to do in Montana that big city folk do, that is why Montana almost outdraws UNC and EWU on AWAY games.......I truely hope UNC gets back to winning so that people give a sh!&- which is why people complained about adding them to the Big Sky in the first place.
"Born in other countries, yet believing you could be happy in this, our laws acknowledge, as they should do, your right to join us in society, conforming, as I doubt not you will do, to our established rules. That these rules shall be as equal as prudential considerations will admit, will certainly be the aim of our legislatures, general and particular." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to Hugh White, 1801

that much we both agree on. People do care, and that's why they're not paying ticket prices to go to the games. I guess they're voting with their dollars?
