Re: NCAA trying to ban messages on eye black under the 'Tebow Ru
People got really pissed at Mark Sanchez when he had the Mexican tri color on his eye black, which was also a stupid reaction to an example of personal expression. Sanchez's heritage inspires him to play well. Reggie Bush's sense of hometown pride inspires him to play well. Tebow's faith inspires him to play well. Why does the NCAA feel the need to micromanage eyeblack of all things? Stupid. But if the NCAA is going to go this route, why stop there? Maybe things written on athletic tape with felt markers should be banned. Maybe tattoos should be covered up. This is nothing more than the NCAA making a storm in a teacup. NCAA ban on personalized eye black:
I also disagree with the idea that personalized eye black takes away from the game. I've never thought it was a big deal at all until the NCAA decided to make it an issue. Eye black isn't a distraction; the NCAA is.

Re: NCAA trying to ban messages on eye black under the 'Tebow Ru
What about Amare Stoudemire, who has "Black Jesus" tatooed on his neck? Or Kenyon Martin with those lips on his neck. The Birdman Chris Anderson has wings under his arms, advertising himself. How is that better than writing your area code on your eyeblack?
You can try and dismiss it as "I can't read tattoos so they don't count", but some people actually do pay attention to tattoos and what a person has on their body. And I'm not sure what you are getting at about contrasting colors there SuperJon, apparently you only think of black players getting black tattoos? Black tattoos stick out on white guys... Kenyon Martin's red lips tattoo is visible from a mile away.
And I agree, I never felt it was a distraction until the NCAA made it an issue. It only takes away from the game if you let it. He isn't going to play any different with 3:16 under there.

I never heard about the Sanchez thing, but if that really happened, then I have no issue with it. Or if someone paints the Bleu, Blanc, et Rouge on their faces, either.

I'll admit it-definitely crushed on Tatum O'Neil as a kid. Something about a chick with a fastball I guess.SuperHornet wrote:It WOULD take a UNH fan to turn this thread into the Bad News Bears.

We're talking football here. Their necks are covered up for the most part. A large part of their upper arm is covered up or isn't visible on a close-up.
Once again, your point is greatly flawed.

Re: NCAA trying to ban messages on eye black under the 'Tebow Ru
A tattoo is part of someones body-eye black is considered and addition to the uniform. You wouldn't have a problem if every player on the field had eye black tape with their own personal message or agenda printed on it? You don't feel that would take away from the game? Which messages would be allowed and which ones wouldn't? Are we also allowed to put messages on our wristbands and our elbow pads. How about their socks? Maybe every player can be a walking billboard. IMO, banning it is the correct rule.catbob wrote:What about Amare Stoudemire, who has "Black Jesus" tatooed on his neck? Soccer and auto racing (particularly bloody NASCAR) has been displaying ads for ages. Baseball added rolling billboards about fifteen years or so ago. People have held signs for years. Yet nobody complains until someone decides to witness?

So, you're saying that college uniforms should become walking advertising billboards?SuperHornet wrote:Soccer and auto racing (particularly bloody NASCAR) has been displaying ads for ages. This has nothing to do with religion. This has everything to do with drawing attention to one player instead of the team. In soccer, everyone wears the advertisement. With eye black, it's individualism instead of the team.SuperHornet wrote:Soccer and auto racing (particularly bloody NASCAR) has been displaying ads for ages. About time this got banned. Only thing I hated about Tebow was him pushing religion on everyone. I wish an atheist would advertise on the eye black. A bunch of the right wing whacko's would change their minds quick on this one.
Re: NCAA trying to ban messages on eye black under the 'Tebow Ru
I have no problem with them banning players having messages in the makeup.eagleskins wrote:About time this got banned. Only thing I hated about Tebow was him pushing religion on everyone. But how is that "pushing religion on everyone"?
If you don't share that particular faith, then just ignore the message.
It isn't any worse than players "pushing" Nike, or Under Armor, or Reebok on people by wearing clothing/equipment with their logos.
Atheist whackos that freak out at anything with any hint of connection to a religion are just as crazy and annoying as those "right wing whacko" religious zealots who have hissy fits about whatever they have hissy fits over.

NCAA = Basketball. Last time I checked, there were a few hundred college teams governed by the NCAA as well.SuperJon wrote:Amare = basketball player.catbob wrote:What about Amare Stoudemire, who has "Black Jesus" tatooed on his neck? Yes I know this topic is about football, but if the NCAA is going to step in and ban messages on eyeblack, there is no reason they couldn't step in and ban tattoos as well. The NBA instituted that rule a few years ago that every player not suited up for a game has to wear a suit. So why couldn't the NCAA force players to cover up tattoos? Personally I don't have a problem with messages on eyeblack or tattoos, but I can see this heading down a slippery slope.
And if you think having 3:16 on your eyeblack is an attempt to shove religion down your throat, you may be a tad sensitive. Should we ban players for thanking God after a win, or making the cross sign after a touchdown, or pointing to the sky, what have you?
Wasn't it Eric Bieniemy who had "CU Later" on his towel when he played for Colorado? I googled it, and this came up about a game CU played in the early 90s: They wore Sal's No. 8 on their wristbands , on their towels and on their cleats. Well I guess they won't be able to do that anymore. Or is it just the eyeblack messages they want to oppress?
Where do you draw the line?

Best post in this thread. This is yet another example of the NCAA getting completely out of control.Hoseinexile07 wrote:People got really pissed at Mark Sanchez when he had the Mexican tri color on his eye black, which was also a stupid reaction to an example of personal expression.
