Reigning UFC Lightweight champion Sean Sherk has tested positive for nandrolone metabolite and handed a one-year suspension by the California State Athletics Commission.
Sherk has been fined $2,500 and handed a ban that is retrospective from the conclusion of his last bout on July 7 through to the end of his licensing year, July 26, 2008. He has been banned a further 10 days to take the ban to a full year.
Normal levels of nandrolone in the body are 2ng/mL. The commission reported that Sherk was found to have a level of 12 ng/mL.
Sherk successfully defended his title in the July 7 fight, beating Hermes Franca in a five-round bout.
The commission also announced Thursday that Franca had tested positive for Drostanolone after the fight. He has been fined $2,500 and banned until July 5, 2008.
