ESPN article on EWU's red turf

CHENEY, Wash. -- The nicknames are already flying and Eastern Washington University hasn't even begun installing its new artificial turf.

The Slaughterhouse. The Blood Rug. The Bordello Bowl.
...
Eastern Washington, located in this suburb outside Spokane, has long been a successful FCS program in the Big Sky Conference. But the Eagles have never gotten much national recognition, or even that much local attention. Attendance is usually around 5,000 for football games at Woodward Field, a tiny stadium on the edge of town that is surrounded by wheat fields.

Looks like Montana does hate it.

Also
FieldTurf, the biggest supplier of artificial turf, is talking to a couple of colleges about colored turf, but said there is no rush to use colors other than green. Company spokesman John Belanger, who declined to name the schools because the deals were not complete, says that using different colors does not appear to hurt performance.

And what if there is a major injury on the field? How will we see how much blood the player lost?"
I don't think I've EVER seen a football injury where anyone needed to know how much blood a player had lost.

I think that overall this is a good deal for EWU. First of all by picking red as their field color they were able to generate support and donations to improve their football field. Considering the fact that some Washington schools had to drop their football programs any positive attention to the Eastern's program has to help.

Eastern has had a good football program for years now and any help getting people to show up and watch them play on a regular basis would be nice.

I agree. But eventually the novelty of a red field will wear off. Ultimately EWU will have to win on the field regardless of what color the field is.
