JohnStOnge wrote:Difficult? I think the chances of you or me being able to paint something like either one of those pieces are a lot greater than the chances of you are me painting something like, say, the image below. The difference is that when you look at the image below you can tell that the artist achieved what he wanted to achieve. Either one of the two paintings your talking about could be total screw ups. A 5th grader with no artistic skill at all could come up with something like that Picasso painting and one could come up with something similar to that Polluck painting by rubbing a piece of fresh cow crap ona piece of paper.they are difficult pieces

Re: Big Money for a Piece of Junk
Not much of an art collector, but had my eye on a piece in a second hand store for a couple of years. The piece was an oil of Manhattan skyline circa 1920. The artist was well known and had an impressive catalogue of collected oils. Owner never put a price on the one in his store, but I had commented on it before. Finally, around January I ask the guy to set a price. When I researched other sold pieces by the same artist, turns out the price quoted on "my" painting was almost tenfold what others had recently sold for.
I offered double the recent market price: He passed. I walked. I won't go back.
It's about finding a sucker who's willing to sell their soul to own something. Personally, the Picasso is an aesthetic abortion, but OWNING a Picasso was apparently worth $100m to somebody.

I finally got a Thomas Woods painting I had to do things I'm not proud of to get the price to where I would buy it - he's one of my favorite artists right now

Re: Big Money for a Piece of Junk
In an art class I took once (at a school unnamed), we were having almost this exact same argument on how hard could it be to really create one of these pieces (specifically something like the painting Grizo posted). So our professor asked us to come up with something even remotely in the vicinity of the painting, and if I recall correctly, only one girl achieved something near it and she was the most artistically gifted person in the class. It's way tougher than some of you think. As for beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder.

Re: Big Money for a Piece of Junk
And it's interesting to look at his paintings in chronological order....

Reminds me of this progression of sketches done done by an artist during an acid trip:
http://www.cowboybooks.com.au/html/acidtrip1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And, the dude could clearly paint realistically if he wanted to. But, I'd expect folks like JSO wouldn't know that because his abstract stuff is far more well known... and there's a reason that it's far more well known... because it changed art... it changed the western world's sense of what is considered "beautiful." If he painted the same ole stuff everyone else was painting... and had been painting for hundreds of years (and what JSO would consider to be the only acceptable form of art) noone would have heard of him.

Dude. You are one deep motherfucker.Chizzang wrote:Interesting twist on what I said...
I'm not sure I actually look at abstract art and think "That ones good" and "That ones bad" usually I try to figure out what the artists was going for and consider the time period in which it was done and the nature of the piece: is it revolutionary is it a product of a cultural shift or events is it a new medium or new technique is it spectacular in a certain way..?
I also consider how it makes me feel, and yes sometimes angry (as we've seen in this thread) is a legitimate reaction or sad or frustrated or whatever... those are important keys for me...

Based on the comparison to Pollack's work...I'd say about $120 million.93henfan wrote:Here's 93henfan #1. How much do you think I can get for it, Chizzang? This was a difficult piece, taking one minute and 47 seconds on MS Paint:Chizzang wrote:Yes John,

Re: Big Money for a Piece of Junk
This, to me, pretty much says it all about art critics:
http://www.artistsezine.com/WhyChimp.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's just an example. I found it because I recall hearing about how art critics raved about chimp paintings so I Googled it.
If there was ever an "Emporer's New Clothes" world, it's the world of art. It's ridiculous.

No wonder you think these pieces are difficult you shitwad. 93 hen painted a beautiful piece there and saying the green line looked "rushed' is an affront to any reasonable man.
That was clearly a well thought out addition due to the time in which it was painted. If you hadn't stopped short and you would have just went with it you would have realized that the green line is there to look like it was hastily added to represent what is going on with Global warming. It's well thought out placement and fairly symmetrical undulating line represents two sides to the debate.
