Normally, I don't like the AL, but I absolutely abhor the Giants. Therefore, this makes me VERY happy....

Normally I abhor the Giants, but I have Lincicum on my fantasy team so this makes me VERY angry. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

Lincecum needs to lay off the hippy grass before games.. guy is totally the opposite of what he was last season.

I've never really understood how fantasy baseball goes. The games just come too fast. I get fantasy football because there's generally just one game a week for each "real" team.

Lincecum
Mauer

I could have told you that in a league that only values HR, RBI, R, SB, and AVG Mauer wasn't going to be a a top pick. Mauer puts up great AVG, slightly above average OPS, very good OB%, above average OBPS.

However, in a league that doesn't count on-base, on-base plus slugging, etc... Mauer isn't a great pick, and this is coming from a HUGE Twins/Mauer fan. His career high for HR before last year was 13 (2006), and RBI was 85 (2008). Joe's career power numbers including last year should have let you know in a rotisserie league that is only taking 5 hitting stats, only 1 of which is about being a consistent base hitter, doesn't play well for Joe. His 162 game average is 16 HR and 91 RBI. On the flip side his average is .325, .406 OBP, .479 slugging, .885 OPS and only 68 SO.

You have no one to blame for yourself for that pick.

Says the guy who picked Pablo Fucking Sandoval with the 38th pick.  And somehow (apparently through blind fucking luck) I'm in second place while you languish in 6th.

He's also 27...and that's a magic age for hitters....he's also gotten better EVERY year. And I could live with his offensive production, it's the fucking AVERAGE that I hadn't counted on. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

We need to get him out from behind the plate. If he wasn't 6'6/6'7 I think he would be good for a couple more years back there, but at that height I think he needs to move. The problem is we can't move him to first because we have a gold glover/one of the best all around first baseman in the majors with Morneau.

It would be great if either one of them was quick enough to play 3rd, because lord knows we need a solid third baseman. However, I don't think either is quick enough to play over there.

Who do we move out of the outfield?

Span?
Cuddyer?
Young?

It would be "easy" to demote Repko but then who don't you start in the OF? I don't think Mauer or Morneau run well enough to play out there either. Keep in mind that Kubel is listed as a DH but plays LF, and Thome can play first base.

The option that is likely to happen is that Punto, or one of those fill in guys we have at third, gets moved, Cuddyer gets moved to third (he has played there in the past), and Mauer gets thrown out to right. That is assuming Mauer covers ground/reads fly balls, and Cuddyer still moves well enough to play third. Mauer may be agile enough to play third, but at almost 6'6 and spending his life as a catcher I don't see it anymore. Maybe coming out of HS/minors when he still was being recruited to play QB for Texas and Florida State....

Some quick research shows the tallest regular 3B in the majors (regular is used semi loosely) is Troy Glaus at 6'5 and Chipper Jones at 6'3/4 depending where you look. The tallest SS appears to be Jeter at 6'3. There are a couple first baseman that are 6'5-6'8 and OF that are 6'-6'7 but none of them would be considered real good defensive players

Well, if THIS year is his typical year (versus LAST year), I don't necessarily want him anywhere but behind the plate (assuming he calls a good game....)

In terms of average this year is BAD for him. In terms of where he is going to finish for RBI's and HR's, he is right on par with the rest of his career. Hell, last year Mauer set a career record for HR by the all star break last year.

That's my point. If THIS is his "on par" year...you do NOT want a corner infielder OR outfielder that hits 8-10 HR's and bats .325. That sounds like a fucking second baseman. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: Might as well let him catch until his knees give out then jettison him. That contract he signed sure looks like an albatross now.... :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

Not every line up/team is built around 3 guys who are going to hit 25-40 bombs.

I would gladly take a player that can/will hit .325+ with the OBPS, OB%, etc... of Mauer, with 80 or so RBI's and 10-15 home runs. The twins put him in front of Morneau and Cuddyer who are the 25+ HR/100+RBI guys.

Not to mention the leadership Mauer brings to the team. Oh, and he calls a hell of a game too.

The days of 6 or 7 of your position players hitting 20+HR and driving in 95+ are gone. With the game "cleaned up" of PEDs the "power" game is going by the way side. Why do you think guys like Jermaine Dye can't get a fucking job? No one is willing to pay a guy who can't really play defense, will hit 30 bombs but have that off set by a .240 average with 150+ K's.

If Dunn, Reynolds, etc... weren't already on teams they would have a hard time finding a spot on a roster outside of a Ortiz role. Hell, that is the only reason Thome still has a job.

Ortiz only has a job because of the union not allowing the AL to get rid of the DH.
And, FYI, baseball lore is LITTERED with .240 hitting power hitters....

Baseball lore is where they are looking to be staying right now. Teams don't seem to be looking for that kind of player anymore. Defense, average, and speed seem to be the trending direction right now. A team will have a player, maybe two, that will hit about .240-.270 but with power and they will load the rest of the line up with speed, average, and defense.

You're going to see a lot MORE .240 power hitters (of course "power" will be redefined as 30+ HR and 100 RBI, like back in the good old days)....And before you bash Dunn, check out his OBP. :coffee: :coffee:

Thats not entirely true. Several teams would take a guy hitting .240 to .250 if he had an OBP around .380 assuming they weren't a defensive liability. If Adam Dunn had decent defense he would be wanted by several teams... guy is a .250 hitter but consistently has an OBP around .380

Heck I wouldnt rule out the Sox making a play for him this offseason to replace Ortiz as DH.
