Montana one victory away from national title
The Montana Grizzlies have a chance to join some elite company this weekend

Only one UM football team has ever won 15 games in a season, but the current Griz could add their names to that exclusive list Friday night.

Coach Bobby Hauck's team (14-1) will face Richmond (12-3) in the Football Championship Subdivision finals at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. UM has won only one football game in that stadium since it became the host facility for the playoffs in 1997. Coach Joe Glenn's Grizzlies beat Furman 13-6 in 2001 to finish with a 15-1 record.

Only one other Montana football had the chance to earn a 15th victory. Coach Mick Dennehy's 1996 club won its first 14 games before falling in the title game to Marshall, which featured All-America receiver Randy Moss and several other guys who went on to play in the pros. That team is widely regarded by fans of FCS (and its I-AA predecessor) as the best squad ever produced by a non-bowl-playing division.

RICHMOND, WHICH EDGED Northern Iowa 21-20 on a last-minute touchdown pass Saturday afternoon, has met Montana only once before.

The Grizzlies defeated the Spiders 37-17 in Missoula in the second round of the playoffs in 2000. Glenn's Grizzlies also advanced to the national championship game that year, losing 27-25 to Georgia Southern.

UM has a 1-2 record in national championship games played in Chattanooga, and a 1-1 mark in title contests played in Charleston, W.Va. Montana's first national crown came in 1995.
