Appa's OPINION does NOT translate into the GOP's NEED. What's more straightforward than that? I could say you "need" to go jump in a lake, but that wouldn't make it a true need. Simply my opinion. Same thing applies here. You must separate the person from the issues. She is a legitimate representative of the hopes and aspirations of millions of voters. Even as a person Palin is not as bad as the vast majority of Dem pols, but she is not my first choice any more than she is the first choice of the majority on this thread.BlueHen86 wrote:I think it's that attitude that guarantees disaster (although I'd be okay giving her a physical embracenative wrote:

The GOP is divided right now and she isn't the person to unite it. I don't know who is, but it isn't her. Let's hope the GOP can find someone electable in the next two years or we get four more years of Obama.
However, making Palin the object of derision and dismissing her and will make her a martyr of sorts and be counterproductive. The success of Republicans is truly in the hands of the eastern establishment and country club types. If they treat Palin like Mike Castle treated O'Donnel, we are all doomed.

I agree regarding the issues, which is why I didn't bold that part of your statement. I don't think the GOP should deride her (the Dems will do that), I just think that they need to distance themselves from her as quickly and politely as they can. If she recognizes that she can't win the nomination, but still wants to be a player I think there is is a place in the GOP for her. I get the sense, however, that she plans on running and that will be a disaster and should be discouraged.native wrote:You must separate the person from the issues. I prefer Chris Christie, too, but he did not win by being a pompous, aloof ass. If Mike Castle had communicated to the Republican base in a civilized manner instead of deriding O'Donnel, he would be the Senator elect. You and Mike's attitudes are the problem. It is within your power to correct the problem by treating Tea Partiers with respect and gaining their trust and support - which Mike Casstle could easily have done. ...or you can remain high and mighty and lose.93henfan wrote:If the Republicans in Delaware had listened to Christie (and me) instead of the teabagger wackos, they'd have one more seat in the US Senate right now:AZGrizFan wrote:

We do not disagree on your point! You seem to assume that the Tea Party is incapable of learning from their mistakes. I disagree. They must be embraced and co-opted. The establishment types must acknowledge their mistakes and move towards the Tea Party.

However, making Palin the object of derision and dismissing her and will make her a martyr of sorts and be counterproductive. The success of Republicans is truly in the hands of the eastern establishment and country club types. If they treat Palin like Mike Castle treated O'Donnel, we are all doomed.Second, and seriously, I reject Palin's know-nothing approach to politics. You can be a conservative and intellectual to boot, or at least not flagrantly anti-intellectual. Palin, O'Donnell and their ilk are giving conservatism a bad name by depriving it of its seriousness and rational approach to public policy. As someone earlier in this thread pointed out, she's just a celebrity, and an unusually shallow one at that.
While it is absurd to call Palin flagrantly anti-intellectual, neither is Palin an intellectual giant. She is run-of-the-mill intellectually for a politician. O'Donnel is unusually shallow, but Palin is not.
It is corruption and lack of discipline that has given conservatism a bad name, NOT Sarah Palin!
Sarah Palin is bright, charismatic, moderately experienced, and has taken advantage of her celebrity and adoring crowds to jump to the head of the line without the gravitas and accomplishments we might prefer. Her opportunity came only because of the corruption and lack of fiscal discipline among traditional Republican politicians, who must eat large quantities of humble pie and demonstrate believable levels of epiphany before they can or should be taken seriously by Palin, the Tea Party or Main Street Republicans.
Palin is not without achievement. Why do you dou dismiss her legitimate accomplishments as governor in challenging both the corruption of the traditional Republican pay-for-play culture in Alaska and the idiocy of the left-wing-nut culture? Sure, there are political arenas larger than Wasilla and the state of Alaska, but she came to the table with greater legitimate life accomplishments than did Obama.
No, Palin does NOT make Obama look like a Churchill.
I agree that Palin is not the person to unite the GOP, but attacking Palin is not the answer.
