Michigan has their guy....
Some here are going to be mighty disappointed.
SignonSanDiego is reporting that San Diego State head man Brady Hoke has been hired at Michigan.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011 ... -michigan/
I'm questioning this move. In time spent at Ball State and San Diego State, he really only has this bowl win over Navy to hang his hat on. He has a losing record otherwise....

this is a good pick, a sleeper pick, but a good one. He's turned around some programs and he's not a bad coach at all. He'll do well I think

Re: Michigan has their guy....
You could be right. Turns out he IS known there because he had an assistant's turn there. But knowing the folks in charge up there, his turn-around had better look like SDSU and NOT Ball State. He was foundering at Ball State for several before they suddenly came on. I know that rebuilding programs take time, but with programs like Michigan's, often people don't have that kind of patience.youngterrier wrote:this is a good pick, a sleeper pick, but a good one. Nope, sorry. Might be a great coach, but he's not a great pick. You really think Michigan fans will be happy with a guy from San Diego State? I give him three years before the Maize nuts run him out of town.

Re: Michigan has their guy....
It's easier to recruit at San Diego than it is to recruit at Ball State. It's even easier to recruit at Michigan, the program sells itself. He's a good coach and has done well with what little he has, he should do better with a prestigious school like MichiganSuperHornet wrote:You could be right. You could be right about that, too, but answer me this: if that's the case, then how was it that a much more established guy with the street-cred that Rich-Rod had at WVU blew it so spectacularly? I mean, he had all the advantages of a B(C)$ conference school with tradition in a place with a boatload of talent just waiting to be picked....youngterrier wrote:It's easier to recruit at San Diego than it is to recruit at Ball State. the cupboard was bare when he got there, His defensive coordinator sucked royally the last 2 years, not to mention he never got the full support of AlumniSuperHornet wrote:You could be right about that, too, but answer me this: if that's the case, then how was it that a much more established guy with the street-cred that Rich-Rod had at WVU blew it so spectacularly? He could do great things.... but, no way this is a great hire. He's at best their 3rd choice. That's not good for a once great program like Michigan.

First two would have been out of this world hires:
Harbaugh
Miles
Hoke will win, and win big at Michigan.

Just look at all the successful coaches in the B10. None of them were "big splash" hires.
The biggest "splash hire" that a B10 team has made in many years was Rich Rod, and that was a disaster.

Re: Michigan has their guy....
Die hard Michigan fan here. Not real enthusiastic about this pick. Hoke is 47-50 as a head coach, never been a coordinator & has compared the spread offense to "communism". If he had not been on Carr's staff he would have never even had a sniff for this job. If this is the guy Domino's Dave Brandon wanted he should have hired him after the Ohio St. game, instead he swings & misses on Harbaugh & Miles & finally on 1/11 he gets his third choice, ridiculous.
I would have preferred to have kept Rich Rod w/a new defensive coordinator, seems like we have another 2-3 years of rebuilding ahead of us.
That said, I sure hope I am eating my words one year from now as Michigan celebrates a Rose Bowl victory.

This would be a decent hire if the school was Minnesota, the only reason Michigan hired him is because he is a "Michigan man."

Clearly, the #1 pick was Harbaugh. Strike One.
But was Miles really Strike Two? I didn't hear much about Miles other than speculation both here and with one of my Michigan fan friends until AFTER Hoke was hired, when I saw an article saying that Miles was staying put.
Did Miles announce that before Hoke was hired, or did he announce it to save face after getting the shaft? Such things have happened before.

SDSU ≠ USD
Hoke will do fine at Michigan. He made SDSU well aware that his dream job is Michigan when he was hired on Montezuma Mesa. To make matters interesting, I think SDSU plays at Michigan in the coming years. I just hope SDSU can stay competitive, had Hoke not been hired by Michigan, I think the Aztecs would have challenged for the MWC title. Hoke make college football relevant in SD again, hopefully it stays that way.

I'm sure all the Michigan fans are breathing a lot easier now that you've said that.dbackjon wrote:Hoke will win, and win big at Michigan.

Re: Michigan has their guy....
Hoke would be a great hire for Eastern Michigan or Central Michigan...but THE University of Michigan??? Come on, he's a nobody with less credibility than Rod had. He's a filler until the right candidate is available next year or the year after. This is flat out embarrassing for such a once-proud program, and anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

Quick...name the last big-time splash coach who was very successful in the Big Ten...
Exactly...Hoke will do fine. He's not gonna win a national championship next year but neither was Miles or Harbaugh.

I'll give him 5 years before they run him out of town, assuming Jim Harbaugh doesn't get fired from the 49ers.

Ron Zook? He was one of the worst coaches at Florida.
Bret Bielema?
Danny Hope?
Your logic is flawed.
Hoke could be good, look at Tressel, but chances are he will not have enough time to succeed at Michigan.

Re: Michigan has their guy....
I like the hire. Hoke's losing record doesn't concern me because he took over two losing programs and turned them around, you incur a some losses doing that and it takes a few years to get your overall record close to .500. The bigger concern is that he hasn't stayed anywhere long enough to demonstrate that he can sustain success.dbackjon wrote:First two would have been out of this world hires:Skjellyfetti wrote:He could do great things.... but, no way this is a great hire. Harbaugh
Miles

IMO, Miles has just as many questions marks as Hoke. Relevant or not, there is the perception the Miles won the NC with Saban's recruits. His defense the past few years has been excellent but his offense has been horrific (the exact opposite of RichRod). His decision-making and clock management would drive the Michigan faithful completely nuts. Is he successful at LSU because he's a good coach & recruiter or is he successful as a coach & recruiter because he's at LSU?

I'm only referring to the talk that because it's wasn't those two and Michigan didn't get their first choice that Hoke is gonna be a flop.
