He doesn't have the name recognition Bo had. He would be lucky to get drafted on the first day if at all because of his size. He would have to work a lot harder, risking greater potential injury to make the team and 2 deep of an NFL roster, whereas he's already drafted in baseball and has things made. The injury potential in baseball is significantly lower too and not as physically demanding. He would make more money over a longer career in baseball

Actually this is smart. He used football for leverage to gain more money and it worked very well. Brilliant move by him to up the bid on him! His future is brighter in baseball anyway. I think he is doing the best thing for him.

15-20 year career (not all at MLB level of course but still not unreasonable) at an average of something like 500K (pretty reasonable) with a lot less wear on body is a whole let better than 5-10 year career at 2 million but getting the shit beat of you every day.

Here is why I think he did.

1. Concussion like you mentioned and other injuries this year.

2. Potential lockout.

3. Money is guaranteed in baseball.

4. He actually likes baseball more.

5. He only held out this long to squeeze more money out of the Cubs.

This idea that he was the second coming of Wes Welker was always overhyped. He was a great college football player, but even in college, he made his biggest contributions, by far, when taking the snap and running out of the wildcat. He was a good receiver, but being a good receiver at the FCS level doesn't translate into being a good receiver in the NFL, especially with his size. And since he wasn't going to have a team change its offense just to take a chance of running him out of the wildcat, his real pro potential in football was always a big leap of faith. He picked wisely - he's got a future in baseball - that's a lot better than trying to hang on to a practice squad in the NFL.

Not so. You can jack up knees on the basepaths. Pitchers and shortstops blow out their rotator cuffs, which one hardly ever sees in football. You hardly ever hear of quarterbacks getting Tommy John surgery.

Money's affected baseball the same way it has football. People are leaving earlier because they have the finances to do so (assuming they husband it wisely).

Yes, all of that can happen

But the majority of injuries in baseball are pitcher arm-related. If you're an outfielder, as long as you can hit the ball you'll be playing until you're 40 (where they've probablymoved you to 1st3rd/DH at that point). Not to mention the years of development you'll get in the minors. In football odds are pretty good you're gone within 3 years, probably hoping you had finished that degree

Not to mention (okay, I'm about to mention it) that the average life expectancy of ex-NFL players is 53-59 years, depending on position (at least according to some sources--this seems to be a bit controversial, as full-blown studies have not yet been completed).

I'm guessing that baseball players last a bit longer.

On the other side of the argument is the fact that the life expectancy numbers are undoubtedly skewed for the NFL by the number of obese linemen (which wouldn't apply to Mr. Szczur).
