Survery, schmurvey. nova basketball, as a top 10 and then a top 20 team, couldn't sell out the Wells Fargo Center once for basketball this year, and only averaged about 16k (about 4k-5k short of capacity). That's for a sport that people in Philly already follow (college basketball), for a team high in the national rankings, against great competition (Louisville, Gtown, 'Cuse, Maryland, St John's, and WVa), for a sport that is by and far the bread and butter of nova university. But you don't think it will be a problem to get at least the same number of people (and let's be honest, you'll need much more than 16k to be successful) for a sport that hasn't been embraced by the city (outside of embracing Penn St), will likely be a losing team for some time (and at least not a top 10 ranked football team), playing a list of teams that will also not likely be in the top 25 (it's been pretty lean times for the Big East in terms of football), playing in the city of Chester?Fact wrote:i just saw this thread and it made me laugh..
the attendance argument is not an issue, VU has conducted surveys that show that attendance is not an issue. the only issue is raising the 30 mill or so to make it happen and apparently even that is going well. don't listen to anything temple fans say about this issue, they have a serious case of penis envy with the whole situation.
They lose $$ hand over foot - as stated earlier in thread only grossing $1.8M profit on men's hoops - they lose more than that in FCS & that's before they would hypothetically announce they're not moving up & alienate a percentage of their already miniscule fanbase. If they don't move up chances are they'll go the way of Hofstra & N'Eastern before the decade is out.JBB wrote:Are there any reasons for the statement that Villanova football cant survive in the FCS?
JBB, this isn't an discussion on faith of fans...as if it were trying to contemplate if there is or is not a God.JBB wrote:on the surface Villanova to the BE is more absurd than NDSU to the Big 12, except for the invite of course. What about following in the footsteps of Georgetown and going non-scholly?GannonFan wrote:Agree with Leadbolt and MJ and BHBK - nova's hand is forced here. They can't stay in FCS. It's either drop the sport now, or move up to FBS and see if that works, which it probably won't, and they may drop football then a decade down the line, especially once conference realignments shake out and they know where basketball will reside. Hard to paint a positive spin here.
True! It's all about the tv sets and the state of North Dakota doesn't have enough of them. And before you argue that Nebraska didn't either, Nebraska has a national following and people all over the country will tune in to Nebraska vs. Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, etc.collegesportsinfo wrote:JBB, this isn't an discussion on faith of fans...as if it were trying to contemplate if there is or is not a God.JBB wrote:on the surface Villanova to the BE is more absurd than NDSU to the Big 12, except for the invite of course. When it comes to NDSU and the Big 12, it is more like a discussion about whether there is or is not an Easter Bunny or Santa Claus.
To put it bluntly, NDSU could build that 200k stadium, crank it up in their state, and guess what...they will still be outside the BCS. Few programs could have done as much as Boise St. did, but at no time whatsoever was Boise St. ever considered for the Pac-12. Had Colorado not been an option, it still would have been Utah and a school other than Boise St.
I put out the scenarios a page or two ago. That's it. There will not be a place for NDSU in the Big Ten as they'll always have their pick of the litter. The Big 12...if they expanded, they have all of Big East (Louisville), MWC, CUSA to choose from. That's a big list with something NDSU will NEVER be able to offer the Big 12...the most important element...TV market penetration. Louisville, BYU, New Mexico, UNLV all do. Houston, TCU, and the other Texas schools have the potential. Even Boise St. would be in the Big 12 mix if brought in with BYU.
We get it, you're a big fan. And it's commendable. But there also needs to be some sense of reality for every fan that needs to be embraced. I love UMass, but I know the ACC isn't going to knock on our doors....ever.
Being in FCS right now is insulting enough to the fanbase at nova, hence why they don't attend now. Non-scholly football in the Patriot League would be shunned completely, save for friends and families of the players and whomever redeems any of the free ticket vouchers nova floods the local area with. Actually, now that I think of it, it wouldn't really be a change from their current attendance.UNI88 wrote:What about following in the footsteps of Georgetown and going non-scholly?GannonFan wrote:Agree with Leadbolt and MJ and BHBK - nova's hand is forced here. NDSU and the Big 12? Keep dreaming. They won't take an FCS school, especially one that hasn't won anything (yet).JBB wrote:I think I was pretty clear on the probability of a Big 12 invite for NDSU sometime in the future. I also think I was pretty clear on the remote probability that VN will be successful in the FBS too. They only have about half the required FBS attendance, no stadium and a pretty small enrollment, even smaller the Notre Dame. They have a lot of TV sets but is anybody going to turn them on?
Its possible they can make it if the move really boosts their attendance, donations and fan interest but we are talking a pretty big boost here. Their BB is already in the Big E and losing money. If they want to play football non scholly is probably a more sound idea. Or, take the investment they will have to make to move up and use it to promote what they have now.
They beat a Big 12 Charter member, the Kansas Jayhawks at football last season. Duh..BigSkyBears wrote:NDSU and the Big 12? Keep dreaming. You'd think that but he has massaged his shtick in the last year to leave those kind of questions open to discussion. I think he still believes a lot of these kind of things. He has begun to see how out in the field a lot of claims are but he's hoping for one of these to hit.DuckDuckGriz wrote:I think JBB is being sarcastic.

Spend at least $30M, and just the up front cost, to "protect" their $1.5M profit in men's basketball. That's some crazy math.Catattack wrote:Villanova MBB made 1.5 million in 09-10 .
The last time they scheduled us was in 1996. We flat out waxed their ass but they came back in garbage time to cut the final score down to 35-14.JBB wrote:I did not know that!
