Is NDSU@Gophers a must win for The BISON?
Is NDSU@Gophers a must win for The BISON?
Last year, due to the competitive nature of the MVFC, the big BCS win at Charter Big 12 member Kansas Jayhawks turned out to be a must win for the Thundering Herd and their National Championship aspirations. The Gopher game could be the same thing this year. I think its a must win game.
Thats the difference between a lot of FCS programs picking up their body bag games and The NDSU BISON. A lot of FCS teams expect to lose. NDSU expects to win and has the season riding on it a lot of the time. NDSU has a must win at Big 10 Minnesota this season.

You're playing the Gophers. About 50% of FCS would expect to win.JBB wrote:Last year, due to the competitive nature of the MVFC, the big BCS win at Charter Big 12 member Kansas Jayhawks turned out to be a must win for the Thundering Herd and their National Championship aspirations. Maybe not 50%, but top 25 would have a very good chance.AZGrizFan wrote:You're playing the Gophers. It's not a must win, but the Bison will go into TCF and expect to win. I'm stilling saying we will come up short, but I'm hoping I'm wrong

Love it. JBB is already laying the foundation for the bison getting the shit beat out of them in the MVFC. Good stuff.

Seriously, South Dakota who has been D1 for like 10 minutes went up there and beat the hell out of Minnesota last year.

It's not a must win, but it would be an embarrassing loss given that the FCS will probably declare NDSU national champions in August.JBB wrote:Last year, due to the competitive nature of the MVFC, the big BCS win at Charter Big 12 member Kansas Jayhawks turned out to be a must win for the Thundering Herd and their National Championship aspirations. How many FCS teams have beaten the Gophers? NDSU, USD come to mind. I know several MVFC teams have played them but those are the only two teams to get wins. Its easy to say you can beat them but the fact is very few have put up the win.

Because NDSU is one of the top 5 teams in the FCS, if not #1, we can figure they are going to be the favorite?
When was the last UNI win over an FBS team? How about Montana or SIU even.

NDSU - perennial pre-season hype #1...
until we hoist either a 1) MVFC championship trophy and/or 2) a National Championship trophy... the amount of boasting by our fans is way out of line... unfortunately - if the Bison don't manage to win one in the next two years - i suspect even winning both won't be enough to cover the amount of junk spewed by our fans to cover... smh
it's bad enough that the pathetic boasting - with very little in the way of real accomplishments to back it up - makes all of our fans look foolish by extension... but what is vastly more frustrating is that unlike... say, Montana or App St - who are hated largely for their demonstrable on-field success... NDSU feels like it's becoming the Notre Dame of the FCS - a team that was once great when the game was completely different - but hasn't really mattered much in years... but whose fans continue to act as though the smallest accomplishment is a sure sign that a return to glory is just around the corner. As a result, most fans revel in every defeat and setback in the hope that it will shut their loud-mouthed fans the fuck up. (or simply because schadenfreude has been made so easy by our fans)

Considering this will probably be their only marquee win of the season, I'd say it is definitely a must win so that you have something to hang your hat on in the offseason.

I used to hate the Bison and the vast majority of their fans (with a few major exceptions)....now I just feel sorry for them.

I had never seen anyone so happy before in my life during the Missoula Encounter when I told you that the Bison lost that day, cannot remember to who. You jumped for joy, told everyone within ear-shot, and then bought a round. I never knew so much joy could come from one little sentence.

I DID enjoy that moment....so much bravado, just unceremoniously flushed down the shitter on one day. But alas, that was then, this is now. They became SO irrelevant....SO fast....it almost makes your head spin. TTBF hit it right on the head.....they're like Notre Dame, trying DESPERATELY to remain "relevant" as the world is passing them by.grizzaholic wrote:AZGrizFan wrote:

I very much have enjoyed watching NDSU rise on the national stage. I've frankly been surprised it's gone so well. That said, I'm realistic... we're the new kid in town, making a name for ourselves... unfortunately our fans have introduced themselves as a contingent of drunken louts, filled with belligerent boasting. The kind of shit that when we were in D-II we could do. In D-II we were the top of the heap... in FCS we're good team - most years... but seeing as we've made the playoffs exactly once, and won zero conference titles (no, i don't count that short-bus GWFC for shit) we ought to be a bit more humble - enjoy our successes - acknowledge our lumps - and just enjoy where the hell we are and how far we've come in 10 short years.AZGrizFan wrote:Are you sure you're a Bison fan? Our fans have cheapened this for me somewhat. Making the NCAA Tournament in '09 was amazing... undermined by our fans blathering about actually beating Kansas and how we were "shoo-in sweet 16 team". Same thing happened with our playoff run - beating RMU was treated like we'd actually done something - so that when we beat Montana St in Bozeman, a legitimate achievement - it was cheapened. I really hope that if we someday manage to win a championship that our fans won't sully that too.

Recently SIU has wins over Big 10 powerhouse and charter member, Indiana, and perennial FBS power NIU. They have lost to NIU by 1 pt. on a missed try for 2 with no time on the clock. They lost by an FG to Marshall while holding them to 72 yds. rushing. In all cases they beat the stuffing out of the opponent. Clearly SIU plays tougher FBS teams and represents the MVC better than their also-ran conference mate.
