Report: Clemens’ DNA linked to blood in syringes

Post by dbackjon »

Tests have linked Roger Clemens’ DNA to blood in syringes that his former personal trainer says he used to inject the pitcher with performance-enhancing drugs, according to a report.

Citing two unidentified sources familiar with the investigation, The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the DNA results are preliminary and subject to verification tests. The newspaper said Clemens voluntarily gave a DNA sample to federal authorities, according to the sources, and it still remains to be determined whether the syringes ever contained steroids or human growth hormone.

The test results could prove important to the investigation into whether Clemens lied under oath to Congress last year when he denied using steroids or HGH.

Prosecutors have asked a federal grand jury in Washington to decide whether to indict the seven-time Cy Young Award winner. Brian McNamee has told federal agents, baseball investigator George Mitchell and a House of Representatives committee that he injected Clemens more than a dozen times with steroids and HGH from 1998-2001.

Clemens’ lawyer, Rusty Hardin, told the Post that the DNA testing “won’t matter at all.”

“It will still be evidence fabricated by McNamee,” Hardin was quoted as saying. “I would be dumbfounded if any responsible person ever found this to be reliable or credible evidence in any way.”

I just have one thing to say about this. Who saves syringes? Really?

McNamee, and it turned out to be a smart move. Clemons is an asshole.

I do not disagree one bit. But doesn't it seem strange that someone would save needles for x number of years because of "just incase?"

He did it in case Clemens ever tried to throw him under the bus, which he did. McNamee knew what he was doing was illegal, but did it anyway...smart actually.

Looks like Roger could be doing some different pitching and catching in the future....
‎"Born in other countries, yet believing you could be happy in this, our laws acknowledge, as they should do, your right to join us in society, conforming, as I doubt not you will do, to our established rules. That these rules shall be as equal as prudential considerations will admit, will certainly be the aim of our legislatures, general and particular." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to Hugh White, 1801

True. Plus, let's say Clemens' DNA is on the syringes; and the syringes contain traces of steroids; how do you prove that the syringes contained steriods at the time they came into contact with Clemens?

I'm not saying Clemens is innocent, but it is very possible that McNamee used the syringes to inject Clemens with vitamin b-12, or whatever Roger claims, and then later placed steroid traces inside.

In law, evidence like this needs to be authenticated through a "chain of custoday" procedure completely lacking here. This never gets into evidence.

Agree....but, much like Clemens tried to use his celebrity in the court of public opinion, McNamee is now doing it back to Clemens...perception is reality...Clemens won't go to jail, but he'll never go to the HOF either....

Hey jon, I originally gave Roger the benefit of the doubt, but I'm long past defending him. He's guilty.

The only question is whether he can be proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of lying to congress about steroid use. I don't think so -- at least not based on McNamee's word, or evidence connected to McNamee.

Doesn't mean he is innocent, though. Roger was a cheater, which hurts to admit because I admired him and his accomplishment (although I never really embraced him).

I agree 100% with what appaholic said above.

Good deal. Agree that they may not be enough evidence to convict

Agree. But then there should be B-12 and Steroids in the syringes, if so then McNamee's credibility would be damaged. Tough though for Clemons if there's just steroids and blood.
