The Phillies hitters have the same approach at the plate no matter who is pitching and no matter what the situation. It can be very frustrating, even more so now that the offense isn't the machine that it used to be. The Phillies will never be able to adjust and will never be able to play small ball, even though small ball is all that is needed with the current pitching staff.

It cost them in the playoffs last year, I hope history doesn't repeat.

Roger that, 86. I saw that story yesterday about the Giants' success in low-scoring, one-run games...

The Giants outplayed the Phillies last year and will likely do so again this year if the Phillies don't adjust their offensive approach. At the minimum the Phillies need to steal more bases, even if Howard is batting. Howard should also bunt into the shift every now and then. I realize that you typically don't want your power hitter bunting, but the pitching is good enough that the Phillies don't need "crooked numbers" to win games.

If Howard could learn to slap it down the left field line, or through the vacated SS hole against the shift, his average would go up 50 points and he'd lead the league in doubles!

I'd like to see the Phillies experiment with a lineup of:
1. Rollins
2. Victorino
3. Polanco
4. Howard
5. Utley

The idea being that if either Rollins or Victorino can get on base they can try and steal a base during Polanco's at bat. Also, Howard should see better pitches with Utley hitting behind him.

So far, neither Victorino or Polano have hit well out of the 5th position, but both have hit well when they get good pitches to hit, which they will batting ahead or Howard.

I'm throwing Utley under the bus, but he hasn't been knocking the cover off of the ball so far. He doesn't have to hit like crazy out of the 5 hole, he only has to hit well enough to get Howard better pitches and I think he can do that better than anyone else on the team.

Cliff owned the Red Sox tonight. :notworthy:

Wow. One earned run allowed in 42 innings of work in June for Lee. Three consecutive shutouts.

Couple of nice HRs by Dom and Shane. Neither were CBP cheapies.

Now to hold the breath and see which Worley shows up tomorrow and then Mr. Hamels on Thursday. :thumb:

Obviously Hamels is the pleasant surprise, Oswalt the disappointment, Lee showing incredible form as of late and Halladay is the stud everyone was expecting.

Worley has been a great #4/5 with Oswalt and Blanton jacked up.

This afternoon's rush hour in Philly is going to be fun. The Phils game should be letting out around 4:30. Pres Obama is set to arrive at the airport to motorcade to Center City at the same time for three fundraisers this evening. Mitt Romney is also in town for fundraisers. And then of course there is rush hour and the people trying to escape town for a four-day weekend for 4th of July.

I'll be enjoying this one on TV! :thumb:

Worley has been huge so far this year. The real test will be when he sees teams for the second time, or should I say, when teams see him for the second time. Great outing last night. :thumb:

I had no plans to go, as the launch was scheduled for 8:30 and I had stuff to do around the house. I checked the webcast at about 8 and they said the launch was bumped to 10:05 so I said WTF and got in the car and headed down. I went to the NASA visitor center and there were maybe a couple hundred people there. Many had been waiting since early evening before the first bump. Well, something went wrong and they bumped the launch again. They announced they would "try to make another attempt before the end of the launch window at 11:30" and that cleared the place out, especially the folks with kids. The visitor center stayed open, so I went in and checked it out and then went back out with t-minus five minutes on the restarted countdown. It lifted off at 11:05.

It was really cool. With the nighttime launch you could see all kinds of sparks and shit coming off the rocket during the various stages. The sound was incredible. I picked up an FM station out of Chincoteague as I was leaving and they were on live remote covering the launch from the town. They were following twitter and takings calls that mentioned that people could see the rocket from the Poconos and NYC.

Cole Hamels was taken out of the game for precautionary x-rays after the third inning. He took a screamer line drive off the base of his palm on his glove hand with two outs in the bottom of the second. He pitched for the third out.

<fingers crossed>

Throwing Herndon in is like conceeding the game. Heck, I didn't know he was even still with the team.
