I got the main playoff eligible conferences almost done, and once I release it, I will put in the non-playoff eligible and the non-scholarship programs on there, so bear with me. It takes 35-45 minutes to do each conference so it is not easy!

I know. That was my response to the thought that "it really isn't a terrible stadium". I haven't quite figured which smiley to use to indicate sarcasm. Of course any outdoor "stadium" would look good to fans of dome teams.

WSSU's Bowman Gray is fine. I think it is rather unique that it is also a race track. Besides... good natural grass field, 18,000 seats, outdoors, lights for night... what more could you ask for a football stadium? But on top of that, WSSU is also getting a new fieldhouse section at the stadium.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A new field house is in the works for Bowman Gray Stadium.

Officials broke ground Wednesday morning on a two-story, 20,000-square-foot field house that will include locker rooms and training rooms for the home and visiting teams, a referee locker room, and a weight room. It will also have a banquet room on the upper level, along with a warming kitchen and conference rooms.

It's expected to be complete by the end of summer 2007.

Winston-Salem city officials, along with those from Winston-Salem State University and Winston-Salem Speedway, said the effort is a collaborative one. WSSU is contributing $3 million toward the cost of the $4.7 million facility.

"This new multi-million dollar facility will provide our student-athletes with a first-class training complex to prepare them for the competition they will face at the Division I level," said WSSU interim chancellor Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital. "It will provide all our students another venue to host conferences, forums, workshops, balls and other activities they plan each year."

A new video scoreboard, measuring 18 by 23 feet, will be built into the field house to serve spectators in the stadium.

During the summer racing season, drivers and speedway officials will use the visitor locker and training rooms. The field house will also have a concession area to serve the pits....

Hampton University- Armstrong Stadium



ARMSTRONG STADIUM

Poised as one of the best facilities in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Armstrong Stadium is the home site for the Pirates football and men and women’s track teams.

Initially constructed in 1928 by William E. Lee, a graduate of Hampton’s Building and Construction program, Armstrong Stadium was completed by HU students with a seating capacity of 1,500.

The stadium was dedicated on October 6, 1928 and the inaugural game was played against Virginia Seminary with the Pirates taking their first home victory 13-0. The 1928 team compiled an 8-1 record including six shutouts while winning the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) crown.

Prior to the present renovation, the stadium seating capacity saw many changes over the years. In 1948, the stadium was expanded when additional seats were added in the west (home) side of the field. The enlargement raised the stadium’s capacity to 4,400.

Under the administration of Dr. William R. Harvey, President, a number of renovations have been completed. In 1978, a new press box was completed on the west side. New bleachers were installed on the west side in 1985 and the east (visitor’s) side in 1986. Stadium lights for night games, along with a new track, were added in 1988. In 1991, a new press box on the east side was added, along with TV towers to accommodate cameras for televised games. Ready rooms underneath the west side stands were completed in 1992. In 1998, the press box was renovated, the stadium was bricked, the playing field was resurfaced and a new scoreboard with the Pro Star Video Screen was added.

During the spring of 1999, additional seating in the North end zone was added, along with a complete new look to the main entrance of the stadium. The new additions also house nine offices, a conference room, three multipurpose audio/visual team rooms (Offense/Defense/Team), a locker room, reception and waiting areas and a team lounge. With the addition of the end zone seats, Armstrong Stadium’s capacity is over 17,000, including standing room.

Norfolk State University- William "Dick" Price Stadium




Norfolk State University plays its home football contests in the spacious William “Dick” Price Stadium, named for former NSU athletics director and head football and track coach Dick Price.

Built in 1997, Dick Price Stadium has a seating capacity of 30,000, and is recognized as one of the largest sports and entertainment venues in Hampton Roads. It is also one of the 10 largest Division I-AA football stadiums in terms of capacity.

The stadium was constructed at a cost of $12.2 million. Located on the southeast end of campus, the stadium has a brick facade, a natural grass surface, an all-weather, eight-lane rubberized track, a two-story press box and concession areas located throughout the stadium’s ground level.

In 2003, Viacom Outdoor Sports Marketing constructed a $400,000 Opto Tech LED video display board at the east end of the stadium to show crowd and field action shots, pre-recorded messages, live satellite feeds for NSU’s televised games, and more.

The first contest played in Dick Price Stadium drew a record 34,000 fans, as NSU hosted Virginia State in 1997 in the annual Labor Day Classic.

For the fourth time in the stadium’s short history, Norfolk State ranked in the top 20 in Division I-AA in attendance per game in 2005. NSU averaged 12,009 fans for its six home contests last season, good for 20th among the 118 Division I-AA teams. NSU ranked 15th in I-AA in attendance in 2003, 19th in 2001 and 17th in 1998.

ABOUT DICK PRICE
Dick Price is the winningest football coach in NSU history. He compiled a 61-42-4 record over 10 seasons (1974-83), which included three of NSU’s four CIAA championships. His teams finished .500 or better in eight of his 10 years at the helm of the program. Fifty-three of his players went into the ranks of professional football.

Price put his stamp on Norfolk State in more ways than one. He also coached the men’s track team to NCAA Division II national championships in 1973 and 1974, and was twice named the NCAA Division II Track Coach of the Year. He later served as the Spartans’ athletics director from 1989-99. He was inducted into the NSU Athletics Foundation Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

Cardinal Stadium - Lamar University

Cardinal Stadium was built in the 60s and has a capacity of 17,500. Although Lamar hasn't played football since 1989, it's now home of the women's soccer team, and the university is preparing a $10 million upgrade of the stadium and fieldhouse in 2009. Football will probably return to Lamar soon after that. BTW, that large building next to the stadium is the Montagne Center, Lamar's 10,000 seat basketball arena.
