And I'm "exploring a move" to Malibu, which also is not very likely to happen. ODU already "moved up" when they began sponsoring football and acting like a real Division I athletic department.Sirloinburger wrote: Dr. Selig is exploring a move to FBS... You seem like one of those guys who's never satisfied. If ODU was in the SEC, you'd want them in the AFC East.
You've got a nice D-I football program that's just beginning to get its feet wet. Sit back and enjoy it, man and don't worry so much about something that likely won't happen in your lifetime.

Like I said, I'm not the captain of this ship. We just completed our first non exhibition season and Dr. Selig has already started the dialogue. Sure it's just talk right now but Coach Wilder gets a 10 year contract and stadium expansion is on the horizon. Sorry, this is going to happen sooner than later. I don't think Coach Wilder wants to do the same thing for a decade. Aim High!

Re: CAA Schedule released by league
For years in hoops we had the irrational people who were dissatisfied that ODU didn't play North Carolina, Kansas and UCLA every year. Of course they would have been equally dissatisfied when we lost to those folks every year. Now rational thought has prevailed and we are happy to play the best that we can play and who'll play us and getting more than our share of wins.
Apparently this minefield will have to be renegiotated in football. I would love playing a 10 year hame and home with Ohio State. But the resulting 0-10 record with probably some significant thrashings would cool my ardor. We do not have today nor will we ever have the resources necessary to compete with the biggest and best of FBS. I'm just happy that we have guys in pads, blocking and tackling, from August till November. And maybe in a few years we can extend that time range further.

Next year would be the same at 7-4 assuming they dump West Chester, as they should.

I think JMU and ODU will be pre-season favorites to win the league. Georgia State and URI near the bottom. The middle will be a crapshoot.
ODU and JMU were both young teams this year ... JMU loses the most on defense (Bryant, Middleton, Pat Williams) ... but the rest were young and they appear to be replacing them with some stud UMD transfers.
Also, JMU with a full season of Thorpe at QB and an OL that returns 2 guys from injuries and everyone that played this year was a fr/soph ... only have to replace Center Babington (Which will still be tough).

UR misses Towson & Maine
Anyone want to sum up who each team misses on the CAA schedule?

Sorry? No need to apologize. You're a fan and can afford to be unrealistically enthusiastic. OTOH, Selig, Broderick & ODU's BOT will continue to have to deal in the real world where 60K-seat stadiums, money for 44 additional scholarships and FBS conference affiliations don't grow on trees. In the end, we fans don't have a clue what's going to happen "sooner or later", so I take your comment for the wishful thinking that it is.Sirloinburger wrote:We just completed our first non exhibition season and Dr. Selig has already started the dialogue. In his 94.1 WVSP radio interview, Selig indicated that the limited post-season opportunities presented by FBS FB now vs. the cost it would take for reclassification weren't there right now, but that ODU continues to explore its options. He mentioned that he has talked with other FCS schools about the possibility of forming a football only conference with existing FCS schools but that it is only talk. Of course one big obstacle would be D-I legislation preventing such activity.
It's good Selig is talking but he's not the only AD who's been talking about FBS FB. In fact, it's been a topic of discussion among CAA brass since the founding of the FB league and even before that. I'd venture to say that many FCS schools and conferences have talked about, considered or studied FBS FB at some point; they'd not be conducting due diligence if they did otherwise. Talk, while necessary, is certainly cheap.

Exactly. Making the playoffs isn't good enough. You want to play deep into the playoffs, the best way to do that is a first round bye, followed by home games. The selection committee just showed you that 9-2 with a weak OOC schedule won't do that, so you need a tougher OOC schedule.Sirloinburger wrote:It's about SOS not style points. we'll get into the playoffs, it's getting a better seed. lol, . So the selection committee is going to be impressed with those 3 OOC oppponents. You make me laugh. When did you become an expert at FCS football. You read what everyone else posts and adopt those opinions. What post did I say SEC? Dr. Selig is exploring a move to FBS. It's not me that's piloting the ship. You're an ODU graduate? I thought our graduates want to become more than just average. Do you want to stay in the same position all your life or do you want to move up? ODU is moving up.
Re: CAA Schedule released by league
You and I and everyone here knows exactly why a Top 10 in every poll team was put in the first round, and it wasn't ODU's strength-of-schedule. The only reason is 'cause there was a team 4 miles down the road that also qualified and there was no way in hell they could justify giving them a first round bye.BlueHen86 wrote:Exactly. ps. Delaware's OOC schedule next season is:
West Chester (DII)
Delaware State
Bucknell

If you read my earler post in this thread I said that UD needs to schedule better, thanks for the PS, but you aren't telling me anything that I didn't already know. So does ODU. I understand that ODU is honoring existing contracts, but I hope they upgrade their OOC once the existing contracts are up.∞∞∞ wrote:You and I and everyone here knows exactly why a Top 10 in every poll team was put in the first round, and it wasn't ODU's strength-of-schedule. I think we bought out the return trip to Campbell next year 'cause we they're playing at our place for a 2nd season in a row and they're not on ODU's 2013 schedule. Re: CAA Schedule released by league
This is a glass half empty - half full argument. No way we get a bye finishing 8-3 (after adding an FBS loss) versus 9-2. Again, the problem this year was 1) weaker CAA than normal, 2) didn't play UNH or Maine, 3) lost to Towson and Delaware, 4) only a home win against JMU was a quality win, and 5) we started too low (understandingly) in people's minds to begin with. Despite all of that, if we bat down a pass on 4th and 29, we get the bye. But regardless, we didn't have a defense good enough, or healthy enough, to go deep.BlueHen86 wrote: I also think you got a first round game because you didn't play an FBS.
The bright side is we got a home game that we could sell out so we made a little cash, which probably helps buying the home game with Campbell next year (where we can make more cash). From a business side of things, we did well.

ODU could at some future date schedule some non CAA games from teams up North. I'm sure StonyBrook, Albany or one of the stronger Ivy's could work a home and away.Or a Lehigh or Holy Cross would also be good matchups.
Re: CAA Schedule released by league
I believe the next open date for ODU is in 2015, unless we buy out Charlotte or Montana in 2014 since we're trying to play 2 OOC home games every season.Seawolf97 wrote:ODU could at some future date schedule some non CAA games from teams up North. 2012: Duquense, Campbell, @ Hampton
2013: Charlotte, Hampton, @ Gardner-Webb, @ Norfolk State (I think this is the year where 12 games are allowed)
2014: Norfolk State, @ Charlotte, @ Montana
2015: Montana, @ Norfolk State, ???

Re: CAA Schedule released by league
ODU open with Duquesne, which finished 8-3 this past season and tied for the Northeast Conference title, but lost a tie-breaker to Albany for the conference's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. Then we play a 7-4 Hampton and a 6-5 Campbell.
This is solid enough of an OOC schedule for a CAA team, our coach has stated aren't doing FBS or DII games and most ODU fans support his decision. As much as the BCS win can give your team a boost, it didn't help Richmond this year or JMU the year before. Now the deal that JMU got playing WVU in DC is a sweet one, but playing a BCS team with 25% more scholarship players, on their terms/field, just doesn't seem fair to me.
In support of the money game, 5 of the 5 seeded teams played FBS games this past year.

Flagship: Are you drinking the FBS-is-an-automatic-loss Kool-Aid? Sure, the App-Michigan/Sac-Oregon State thing is a once-in-a decade thing at best for any one FCS school. Granted. But don't factor out the (dubious?) FBS "credit" for playing Sun Belt/C-USA/MAC schools. If Liberty can get a FBS win that way, then so can you. Perhaps it doesn't generate the $$ that playing LSU would pay, but there are plenty of low-tier FBS programs within an easy commute of ODU to suit. Heck, if you want SEC cred, just play Vandy. While that's not a gimme like Ohio or Buffalo would be, Vandy would be a winnable game for a squad like ODU.

Or we can just make a lot of money playing a home game. Plus having over 30000 people tailgating on campus during game day generates more campus excitement, school pride, good publicity, and merchandise sales than any FBS check could; it's also a nice boost for the local economy. We're trying to build the ODU brand to potential customers (both athletically and academically), and nothing does it better than getting as many people as possible on campus to showcase our product.SuperHornet wrote:Flagship: Are you drinking the FBS-is-an-automatic-loss Kool-Aid? There's nothing wrong with that, Trip, particularly if it's a general guideline, not a set in stone thing. An OCCASIONAL FBS game to generate funds (and it doesn't necessarily have to be a bodybag game or a season-killing series of bodybag games) can be beneficial. But it should be ONE game balanced with the rest of the schedule. And if you have a philosophy that limits them to once ever few years, that's fine. Having butts in the seats at home is a wonderful thing. Even better if you can talk an FBS into a home-and-home that they'll actually honor. (And I agree that many outside of Navy-Delaware will not.)
