For Joe...
I'm somehow in a debate with one of my old chiefs. He has posited that "Mr. Baseball" is Don Mattingly. While I'm nowhere near a Yankees fan, I would think that George Ruth would be a better choice. While they weren't discussed, I could also easily see the likes of Gehrig and Mantle with that title over Mattingly. Jerry Coleman would also make my list. I don't necessarily think that one has to be a Yankee to get this title, but even if one does restrict the list to Yankees, for me these guys are better fits than Mattingly.
Who's right, Joe?

Babe Ruth was the Sultan of the Swat
Lou Gehrig was the Iron Horse
Mickey Mantle was The Commerce Comet or just The Mick
Mattingly was Donny Baseball

Re: For Joe...
Agreed. Mattingly was always known as Donnie Baseball or The Hitman.
Never heard him called Mr. Baseball.
Mattingly was a pure joy to watch if you were a baseball fan. His omission from Cooperstown because of his career-shortening injury is one of the great wrongs of baseball.

Mattingly was a class act who should be in the HOF. Too much class for the Yanks. Sorry, Joe!

On a lighter note, Joe, the Yanks did crush the Sawx's Fenway centennial party with 5 homers last night!

Stupid Don Mattingly had three good years. Only reason Joe thinks he's a HOFer is because he played for his team. SMFH

Mattingly was among the very best players in the game from '84 through '90, and was absolutely the best player in baseball for much of that period.
Perhaps he should have been a better-than-average player like Eddie Murray or Cal Ripkin, and just amass career numbers over a long period of time.
Maybe he could have insisted on playing every day for years and years, putting up .260 averages several years along the way, even if the team itself might have benefited from him taking a rest a few days every season.

Re: For Joe...
You make a pretty good argument for Mattingly, Joe, but I'm not sure he was even the best infielder of that era. I'd have a look at George Brett (3B), Ozzie Smith (SS), Ryne Sandberg (2B), and (as a stretch, due to fewer years in the era you cite) Steve Garvey (1B).
That said, Mattingly is worth a look for the Hall. I personally wouldn't vote for him, but he wasn't so bad that I'd look askance at someone else voting for him.

As a HOF'er, I should know this, but I don't.
Who nominates/votes for players to get into the HOF?

Sorry Joe, he had barely over 2000 hits. Not a HOF'er. It's science.
