Care to share with us Sac State's record over the past 5 or so years against the former members of that "crappy conference"?
Just looked it up Sac State is 2-7 against the Great West since 2006......0-4 since 2009. In fact Sac has a losing record against every member of the Great West they have been willing to play.....crappy conference for sure.
The Great West was the WORST football conference in the country hands down. Didnt say all the programs were crappy or that any were crappy for that matter, so calm down young lady.
And Poly and the farm extension getting in with a football only membership is complete and utter BS. You p*****s couldnt handle being an all-sports member so .
First off I usually respect your opinion, but you lose a ton of credibility when you say that the GWFC was the WORST football conference in the country.
Second, the Big West with the addition of San Diego State and Hawaii is a higher rated conference in most olympic sports. It is complete BS because you know it is the best of both worlds for CP and UCD and you wish you could do the same.

Got it.....so all the teams in the conference are good but the conference sucks....makes perfect sense to me know. I am thankful that the Big Sky extended the football only invite and I have no interest is bashing the Big Sky Oly sports but its pretty easy to see that the Big West is a far better Oly sport conference for Cal Poly and Davis...and probably Sac St as well if they'd let you in.
On a related topic, where will you guys be playing baseball in 2014? Right...that is what I thought.

I think THAT'S what Herky's issue is....Sac was forced to move for ALL sports, but CP & Davis were allowed in as football only members.
Oh, and Big West is a better fit for no other reason than travel costs. That ALONE is enough reason not to move all sports.

The Big Sky is a great conference and I would have proud to be full member, but the Big West is better fit for Poly and Davis' olympic sports mainly because of travel cost and it offers a home for our baseball, softball and men soccer teams. I think the Big Sky becomes stronger as a football conference with the addition of both schools without adding the additional cost of traveling to California for their Olympic sports.

Agreed 100%. In fact, I wish Sac was an affiliate member as well.

It is. Why in the world should any team be forced to be an all-sports member now that they have allowed two other schools to be affiliates.
Why shouldnt every program be allowed to just go where ever and save money on travel costs? Oh no, can't do that. They invite a program in BFE to join that increases travel costs and offers no real benefit to the conference other than another all sports member.

Okay, fine. You've twisted my arm enough, the Great West Conference was the best, most powerful, football conference that ever existed. It was second to none.

Like I said above, I'd be fine with Sac as an affiliate member...the precedent is certainly there now.

Feel free to read up earlier in the thread....The Great West had good teams but it never had a an autobid and it never had stability. I'm sure every former member school is happy as hell to be in the Big Sky. The point that was being batted about was whether those schools will be competative in the BSC and I am quite certain that they will.

I think you use the wrong word with "forced" rather than "allowed". UCD and Cal Poly bring good, strong football programs to the Big Sky. Plus, they were not forced into the hell that is football independence. Win-win.
Responding to a different post, USD was supposed to be a package deal with UND, but bailed at the last minute. So much for a travel partner.
I welcome UND with open arms. If Idaho falls through, I hope the Big Sky can lure SDSU or NDSU (hell, even USD, those bastards) to the Big Sky.

No I didn't. If Sac wanted in, they HAD to move all sports. At that time, the BSC didn't accept affiliate members. Times changed and to get CP and UCD, the BSC commissioner had to be more flexible. "Forced" is the right word. It was either that, or they weren't getting in. Period.

We're making a HUGE assumption here. Specifically, that if the Big Sky "graciously" allowed Sac the same sweetheart deal they gave CP and UCFE, the Big West would automatically open their arms to Sac's Olympic sports. I don't necessarily think that would be in the immediate offing. Let me explain.
First, thinking from the BWC's perspective, what need do they have of Sac? Hawai'i just joined for Olympic sports, and San Diego State is at least right now about to, if they don't welch. Bako and UCSD were rejected.
Second, SoCal fans want nothing to do with Sac, as they see Sac as equivalent to UC Riverside across the entire sports spectrum. (They're patently wrong there, but that's beside the point. One of the reasons UOP split was the excessive SoCal focus of the conference.)
Yes, travel costs are a big factor in the selection of a conference. But we should take a lesson from the XDSUs. If the conference, the schools, and the fans don't want you, don't try bashing the door in, because all you'll get is a headache.
SloStang: If CP ever decides to go all in for the Sky, softball wouldn't be an issue because the Sky is pulling all of their teams out of the PCSC. That is ALSO one of the reasons UOP bailed on the Big West; the WCC is doing the same thing. The PCSC is pretty much more dead than the WAC.

The Great West was a good "get your feet wet" conference for teams moving up from DII into DI. UNC, NDSU, SDSU bailed to AQ conferences as soon as they were invited. The Big Sky took UNC, the MVFC took the SU's. USD was already about to join the Summit League when the BSC called them for an all sports membership but USD would've had to pay an exit fee to the Summit and then got a sweet deal from the MVFC (also reunited with their in-state rival). UND had a visit planned by the Summit League when they got the all sports invite from the BSC and took it ASAP when they knew there was NO plan for the MVFC to invite UND so UND went to the Big Sky. That left SUU, Cal Poly and UC Davis. SUU was very out of place geographically in the Summit League so when the BSC gave them a full membership (and you can't have a 3 team football conference) they went to the BSC. So Cal Poly and UC Davis had a choice...Big Sky or Independent. They took Big Sky, and that ended the Great West Football Conference. There is your GWFC history from 2002-2012.

Darell that is not quite the sequence of events that I recall. Cal Poly did not move from DII to the GWC they played in the short lived America West for several years prior and I don't think they were the only ones who didn't jump straight from DII
Cal Poly and Davis were offered football only membership into the BSC before UND, USD and SUU not after and there was never a minute that Cal Poly was considering independence. In fact many have argued that the Cal Poly/Davis invite to the BSC was a pivotal moment for the WAC. Poly and Davis were likely considering moving to the WAC/FBS because of the scheduling difficulties that they were having in the GWC. They were not really ready to make that move but their options were limited. Up to that point the BSC has been insistent on a all sports membership. When Fullerton offered the football only membership Cal Poly and Davis jumped at the opportunity and the WAC lost two potential targets for new members.....

As I recall Sac State, Northridge, Poly, davis, Portland St. maybe Santa Clara, St. Mary's and Southern Utah were part of the America West. The America West was composed of d2 programs moving up. Sac State, Northridge and maybe Portland State left at the same time in the the early 90s for the Big Sky. The other schools minus Santa Clara and St Mary's which dropped football reformed into the Great West. The America West/ Great West was always a refuge for schools moving up with no other options.

I know it wasn't date by date and year by year I just did a quick history lesson. I am suprised that the BSC didn't jump on Cal Poly when they accepted UNC.

The way I understand it the Big Sky had an open invitation to Cal Poly for as a full member, but Cal Poly was not willing to pull their Olympic sports from the Big West because of travel cost and the Big Sky did not sponsor baseball, softball and men's soccer (all big sports for Cal Poly). When the Big Sky offered a football affiliate membership Cal Poly jumped all over it.
