Big Sky preseason polls

Yep....baseball and especially soccer are a bigger deal at Poly than folks from other schools understand. For Cal Poly to leave the BWC and their rivalry with UCSB is almost a non-starter. The BSC/BWC membership is a really sweet deal for Cal Poly.

I forgot for a second that there were more than just AWC-connected people in the room, GATW. Anyone whose team was in the AWC would know that the 1995 AWC football champions had the awesome nickname of Hornets....

Re: Big Sky preseason polls
When Boise, Nevada and Idaho left the Big Sky the Conference chose Sac State, Portland and Northridge as replacements. The BSC wanted to expand into the west coast and locate teams in major media markets for recruiting and marketing. I recall Poly being in consideration and the conference touring the campus but a invitation was not extended in favor of the other three. davis at the time was still d2 so they were not in consideration.CPAlum wrote:SloStang wrote: The way I understand it the Big Sky had an open invitation to Cal Poly for as a full member, but Cal Poly was not willing to pull their Olympic sports from the Big West because of travel cost and the Big Sky did not sponsor baseball, softball and men's soccer (all big sports for Cal Poly). I am glad that the BSC finally allowed Poly and davis in even as "Part Skyers" it will be good to have all the California schools in the same conference again, even if it is only for football.

I think this is about as precise as you can get at this point in the (pre) season.
Re: Big Sky preseason polls
Me too. Being quasi-independent (since GWFC was really only ever a partial conference) was starting to be a real bitch. There was some discussion on the UCD board about coming up with a California Cup or something for whoever beats out the others between Davis, Sac, and Cal Poly. Davis/Sac have the Causeway Carriage and Davis/CP have the Golden Horseshoe. Is there anything between Sac and CP or is that not so much of a rivalry?Green Laser wrote: I am glad that the BSC finally allowed Poly and davis in even as "Part Skyers" it will be good to have all the California schools in the same conference again, even if it is only for football.
I more or less agree with Screamin_Eagle174's synopsis. Although I'd probably put Cal Poly more nearly middle of the pack. But it's all farts in the wind right now. That's why they play the games.

Swap Sac and SUU, bump UND to the cusp of DH, and bump UCD to MoP (lower end).Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:In no particular order,

Re: Big Sky preseason polls
They do, but not quite as bad as they have. I was impressed with how much of a game UNC gave us last year in Cheney. Lobato is a pretty good QB. Every 3rd and 7 or 8, I thought we were going to get our D off then field, and then he made something happen every time. UNC will start to win games with him.free7694 wrote:#MyTeamSucks

Indeed, UNC's defense will win some games for them this year IMO.
Also, they got completely robbed in the UND game last season.

Re: Big Sky preseason polls
The game between Sac and Poly is referred to as the Green and Gold Bowl, however, there is no trophy or other type of prize that follows the winner. Poly currently leads 16-15 all time.fugawe09 wrote:Me too. Being quasi-independent (since GWFC was really only ever a partial conference) was starting to be a real bitch. I like the idea of having a "California Cup".
If it looks like a cow, smells like a cow, and moo's like a cow, it's a UC Davis coed.

Re: Big Sky preseason polls
Yeah, it was PSU. They called back a game winning TD for a holding call. Two days later Fullerton goes to the media and says it was the wrong call. We did play better towards the end of the season and we have a bunch of new players and coaches. We shall see...EWURanger wrote:I thought it was UND but maybe you are right.Wildcat Ryan wrote:

Portland State was DII before they moved to the Big Sky in 1996. We were DI until 1981, then moved back down to DII and the Great Western Athletic Conference until getting the Big Sky invite.Green Laser wrote:When Boise, Nevada and Idaho left the Big Sky the Conference chose Sac State, Portland and Northridge as replacements. Re: Big Sky preseason polls
I am not buying the idea that Portland State is 4th. We need to replace both Kavanaugh and McCaffrey and while we have possibilities, nothing is certain right now. Also going to North Dakota in week 2 scares the hell out of me.

I think more than anything else its a show of how much respect everyone has for Burton.JALMOND wrote:I am not buying the idea that Portland State is 4th. In my view PSU is a scary team with him at the helm

Appreciate you pointing that out. Respect is one thing, but it won't win many conference games. History has shown how difficult it is to win in the conference with a new QB at the helm.cats2506 wrote:I think more than anything else its a show of how much respect everyone has for Burton.JALMOND wrote:I am not buying the idea that Portland State is 4th. Re: Big Sky preseason polls
PSU's QB position may be up for grabs, But McCaffrey has a good replacement in Maryland transfer D J Adams. But from what I've read JC transfer QB Colin Ramirez is proving is adapting quite well to the Pistol offense. I will be happy to see an improvement on last years 7-4 season

I'm picking PSU to get into the playoffs. Your guy, Burton knows how to recruit.

2006 - Josh Swogger

2001 - John Edwards
1999 - Drew Miller
1996 - Brian Ah Yat
1993 - Dave Dickenson
So, that disproves that notion to some extent.
I still don't think PSU will contend for the title, though.

I find it hilarious that a Sac. St. fan would even attempt to talk smack. When is the last time they even won the BSC? or have they ever?CPAlum wrote:Herky wrote:
The Great West was the WORST football conference in the country hands down. Didnt say all the programs were crappy or that any were crappy for that matter, so calm down young lady.
And Poly and the farm extension getting in with a football only membership is complete and utter BS. You p*****s couldnt handle being an all-sports member so .
Got it.....so all the teams in the conference are good but the conference sucks....makes perfect sense to me know. I am thankful that the Big Sky extended the football only invite and I have no interest is bashing the Big Sky Oly sports but its pretty easy to see that the Big West is a far better Oly sport conference for Cal Poly and Davis...and probably Sac St as well if they'd let you in.
On a related topic, where will you guys be playing baseball in 2014? Right...that is what I thought.
