Dodgers get Victorino from the Phillies fire sale.
Giants land Hunter Pence from said Phillies fire sale.
Rangers win sweepstakes for Ryan Dempster.
Rangers also get Geovany Soto from the Cubbies...and immediately designiated Yorvit Torrealba for assignment.
Yankees get Casey McGehee from the Pirates for Chad Qualls (apparently to replace A-Fraud)
Reds acquire Johnathan Broxton from the Royals.
But, in perhaps the biggest news of all: Yesterday the Diamondbacks designated Joe Mauer Jr (AKA Lyle Overbay) for assignment. I guess Goldschmidt has the job for good now.

Salary cap?
Salary cap, luxury tax - it's all just semantics I suppose.
But to the other point, you can't call something a fire sale when you get rid of a player who was going to be a free agent at the end of the year and not resigned anyway. Everybody loves Victorino, and he'll always be a World Champion Phillie, but everyone also knew either he was staying or Hamels was and once the contract was signed it was only a matter of time.
The Pence trade is something else, but I think the Phils were also miffed that he did very little for the first half of the year and didn't step up in the absence of the big boys to keep the Phils afloat.

Fire sale as in "they're throwing in the towel for 2012."

Sure, if you want to define it that way. Certainly pales in comparisons to fire sales from other teams where they through in the towel for multiple years ahead. But yes, the Phils have thrown in the towel on the 2012 season. Although frankly, they pretty much did that several weeks ago.

Oh, I don't think the Phightin' Phillies are anywhere NEAR done with dismantling their team...

Good thing the Rangers did something and got Dempster (even if he is overrated). Yu Darvish imploded again tonight. Seriously, I could see this team not making it out of the first round with no ace pitchers.
