BREAKING NEWS: B10 In Advcd Talks To Add Rutgers & Maryland
This is according to Yahoo Sports.
Pat Forde and Dan Wetzel both tweeted it in the past 10 minutes, says story will be available on Yahoo Sports soon.
Story:
Maryland and Rutgers are in advanced discussions with the Big Ten about joining the conference, multiple sources have told Yahoo! Sports.
Nothing is official yet, but tentative plans for announcements from the two schools that they are leaving their current leagues could come early next week, sources said. Maryland is a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and Rutgers has been a member of the Big East since 1991.
Their movement would increase Big Ten membership to 14, and would come not long after most college sports observers believed the conference realignment carousel had stopped spinning. Notre Dame’s announcement in September that it would join the ACC while remaining independent in football was thought to be the end of a two-year spasm of realignment that significantly altered the college landscape. Big Ten leadership last spring said it was comfortable with its current 12-school alignment.
But that might no longer be the case.
A move to the Big Ten would be costly for Maryland. After the Notre Dame addition, the ACC voted in September to increase its exit fee to $50 million in an attempt to solidify membership. Two schools voted against the fee increase: Maryland and Florida State. Maryland president Wallace Loh told the Washington Post at the time that his vote against the fee was on "purely legal and philosophical" grounds.
Rutgers would face a $10 million exit fee from the Big East, provided the school gives 27 months notice. If Rutgers were to leave before that time, the exit fee could be as much as $20 million. West Virginia paid that amount when fleeing to the Big 12 last year.

This is getting disgusting. I wonder what this will do to their bogus division names.

Old news. This has been on the Penn State boards for almost a week.

Keep watching, we will eventually see a 4 conference scenario each with 16 teams and conference championship games. Everybody else will be in a sub-tiered division. The power 4 will control all the TV money and the BSC playoffs will be nothing but a sham, once again keeping the "little guy" from ever getting a seat at the table.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: B10 In Advcd Talks To Add Rutgers & Maryl
Not sure exactly other than that the divisions (as they stand now) are REALLY (more or less) east and west. The addition of two eastern teams throws a monkey wrench into that and may cause them to re-think how they divide the league, including scrapping the stupid names. The NHL at least made sense when they named their conferences and divisions after people important to the development of the league. Illinois is a "leader?" Iowa is "legendary?"clenz wrote:What about these additions would change the name oddities of each divisionSuperHornet wrote:This is getting disgusting. Great, two more teams that the top tier teams can spank.

If this happens I think UConn ends up in the ACC and the Big East is on life support as a football conference.

Then the ACC will raid more Big East schools; Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida etc. The ACC still has a contract with the Orange Bowl, it may become less relevant in football, but it will continue to exist.MSUDuo wrote:I think they ACC goes on life support as a football conference as well. Exactly. I guess they'll still have football but that's going to be a basketball conference through and throughBlueHen86 wrote:Then the ACC will raid more Big East schools; Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida etc. The ACC still has a contract with the Orange Bowl, it may become less relevant in football, but it will continue to exist.MSUDuo wrote:

And that is the reason that I think the ACC is fine. Maryland may be able to get out with the help of a friendly Alum but that's a lot of money for anyone.bluehenbillk wrote:$50 mil to get out just screams as to how much the new Big Ten TV contract must be in 2017....
Looks like it is done.

Maryland BOR accepts invite
The board unanimously approved the move to the Big Ten, a regent told ESPN. An afternoon announcement is expected.
Sources also said that Rutgers is expected to follow the Terrapins and will announce its own move from the Big East to the Big Ten, possibly as early as Tuesday. A Scarlet Knights move would give the Big Ten 14 members.
Rutgers' Board of Governors is holding a regularly scheduled meeting Monday in New Brunswick, N.J.

Source: ACC favors UConn, Louisville to replace Maryland
The ACC is leaning heavily toward adding a 14th team to replace Maryland and has two favorites for the spot -- UConn and Louisville -- according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
The ACC is also in talks with South Florida and Cincinnati, according to the source, and could add "pretty quickly." Factors on the decision include geography and television market viability, on-field performance and academic success.
All eyes are on the ACC as it protects its own after the Big Ten poached Maryland, a founding member. The league was blindsided by the move but wasn't totally shocked given Maryland's struggling financial department and the school's administrative turnover without an allegiance to the conference's tradition.
This isn't great timing for the Big East, which is immersed in television negotiations with ESPN, NBC Sports Network and others.
Among the four, Louisville's probably a better football/basketball program pound-for-pound, but UConn is the better TV market.

Why BC? They have become completely irrelevant in football and basketball since joining the ACC. Massachusetts is also a long way from the Big Ten base.CitadelGrad wrote:BC and GaTech to the Big Ten. You heard it here first.
Did you hear this somewhere? It's a good move for Big ten hockey, but I don't see it otherwise.

UConn makes more sense for the Big Ten than BC does. That said, nothing would surprise me, so maybe BC will end up in the Big Ten.

If they get that 50 mil taken care of, I hope FSU is next.
