Hell, Mauer has better numbers than Molina. Is HE going to be in the conversation for AL MVP? I don't think so...

McCutcheon, great stats after a slow start, and leading his team to first place.

Without Goldschmidt, the Diamondbacks are in LAST place, almost guaranteed. He has singlehandely won 3 of the last 4 games for them alone.

ESPN voters would pick McCutchen. His WAR is higher this year than last.

1 Andrew McCutchen, CF, Pittsburgh Pirates 22
2 Paul Goldschmidt, 1B, Arizona Diamondbacks 6
3 Yadier Molina, C, St. Louis Cardinals 4

It should be Goldy, but he probably won't win it.

If Goldy had the numbers he had this year in LA, Boston, Chicago or NY, he'd be unanimous

I don't think he beats on Miggy or Trout in the AL, if he's in any of those cities. McCutchen is in little ole Pittsburgh. It's like AZ's argument about first basemen in the Mauer thread, 36,125 is what you expect. Mark Teixeira had those numbers or better several years, played in NY and never won the MVP. If Goldschmidt played a different position, his WAR would be higher and he would get more MVP votes.

36/125 may be what you expect, but in the NL there's not another 1st baseman even CLOSE to Goldies #'s.

1st in WAR (by .6 over the next closest, Joey Votto)
1st in HR (by 12 over the next closest, Joey Votto) And T1 1st in all of NL
1st in RBI (by 16 over the next closest, Freddy Freeman) And 1st in all of NL
1st in SB (by 9 over the next closest, Joey Votto)
1st in hits (by 5 over the next closest, Joey Votto) And 4th in all of NL
1st in OPS (by .026 over Joey Votto) And 1st in all of NL
1st in SLG (by .050 over Freddy Freeman) And 1st in all of NL
2nd in OBP (to Joey Votto) And 4th in all of NL
2nd in BB (to Joey Votto) And 3rd in all of NL3rd in 2B
T2 in 3B

Category: Goldie/McCutchen
WAR: 7.0/8.2
HR: 36/21
RBI: 126/84
SB: 15/27
Hits: 182/185
OPS: .952/.911
SLG: ..551/.508
OBP: ..401/.404
2B: 36/38
3B: 3/5

So, unless they're basing this award on stolen bases and WAR, only a retard would vote for McCutchen. I'm guessing we'll see a lot of retarded voting.

Myself, I'm not a big WAR advocate, but what makes it important to the new age stat geeks is the points given for defensive position, making a non-first basemen a better all-around player using that system. I don't have a horse in the race, but there are a lot of retards voting in today's world.

Defensive WAR by Fangraph, from WIKI. First Base is almost as bad as DH.

the positional adjustment is a value dependent on the players position: +12.5 for a catcher, −12.5 for a first baseman, +2.5 for a second or third baseman, +7.5 for a shortstop, −7.5 for a left fielder, +2.5 for a center fielder, −7.5 for a right fielder, and −17.5 for a designated hitter.[13] These values are scaled to the number of games played by the player at each position.

Paul Goldschmidt - Gold Glove winner.

And from watching games, I can tell you his defense has led to some wins.
