Turmoil In Ranks Of Punkin Chunkin

Post by 93henfan »

Man, nothing is going right in Delaware sports any more.

http://www.delawareonline.com/story/new ... /18353823/
About a month after Punkin Chunkin was canceled for the first time in its long history of launching gourds, the organization's president, John Huber, announced he's had enough.

Huber, in an email he sent to those involved with Punkin Chunkin, said he won't stand to serve another term. Huber did not immediately return calls for comment.

"I am resigning this year. Not for the bullies in this organization because they don't scare me or add any value to you, they are shameful. I am resigning because I just don't need it, I held this position for the best of the chunk always, always first...

Generally speaking, one of the first requirements for taking on a Punkin Chunkin World Championship is to make sure you have enough distance to measure the chunkins.

Supposedly they need to clear additional space because the air cannons would have been ranging the treeline. They're on the verge of breaking the one mile mark.

WIth all the new housing developments in Sussex, it's hard to find the land.

Well, it was being held in Bridgeville, which isn't exactly the Mecca of Sussex County tourism. They had plenty of space, but one of the pumpkin chasers flipped his ATV and broke his back and sued the farmer who owned the land. Owner immediately said he was done. This all happened this year, and I think Dover Downs probably canceled at the advice of lawyers, in addition to the problem with distance. They were close to having the mile and a half or so needed but not quite.

The new golf/retirement community in Bridgeville. I couldn't believe they built it, but I think it's doing OK. There's another in Millsboro. Don't get me wrong, I love my time in Sussex, but that's because I'm on the water and near the beach. Ivy will have to clue us in as to how somebody could retire to inland Sussex. ;)

89, if you're referring to Heritage Shores, it's not doing all that well. Many unsold homes, and the restaurant (which is actually pretty good) has had to cut back to a few nights a week. The retirees stayed east of Rt. 1, for the most part.

Are you speaking of Doc Hollywood? Nothing as good-looking as Julie Warner has come out of the Broad Creek dripping wet, I can tell you. Except maybe a few smallmouth bass. ;)

Then I guess I was right to be skeptical of them building it in the first place. The one thing Bridgeville had going for it was that if you lived there, you'd be home now. ;)
