Eight female badminton players were disqualified from the Olympics on Wednesday for trying to lose matches the day before, the Badminton World Federation announced after a disciplinary hearing.

The players from China, South Korea and Indonesia were accused of playing to lose in order to face easier opponents in future matches, drawing boos from spectators and warnings from match officials Tuesday night.

Those Russian women gymnasts were crying like babies last night, even though they got the silver. It's not like they all have to go home and sleep with Putin for not winning the gold. SMFH. :roll:

Gymnasts cry like babies. It's what they do. Did you see our star bawling because a teammate got a spot over her in the individual? Hard to fault another country for having crying female gymnasts. :lol:

So, something that happens routinely in most every sport (think NFL or NBA teams sitting star players in season finales or in World Cup teams sitting players with one yellow card in their last game of round robin play) as players and teams try to tweak the standings to get a good matchup is met with horror when it's done in Badmiton? How about when Olympic swimmers and runners post significantly slower times in preliminary heats and *gasp* don't go all out to win those prelims? Pretty much the biggest problem here is that they didn't tank the matches well enough - they made it too obvious. They didn't do a well enough job in putting up the charade like everyone else does. Man, who knew badmiton was such a whacked out sport?

She came in 4th in the overall rankings, but each country can only have a max of 2 compete in the all-around competition. So she finished higher than the other 20 that did qualify.

Watch this video. Any of us would have easily won this badminton match. It was an absolute joke - worse than anything you have ever seen. The whole part was bad but especially watch :28 through 1:10.

http://www.nbcolympics.com/wnbc/video/b ... match.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When the teams sit their stars, the guys on the court are actually trying. Not so much in the badminton match in the video above. In swimming and track preliminary heats, the idea is not to win the race but to be in the top XX finishers. There is no credit for win or loss given in the heats.

The equivelent in basketball would be for the players on the court for the whole game taking all 24 second shot clock violations, throwing the ball 10 feet over their teammates heads out of bounds and for good measure, throwing the ball off the backboard at 100 mph so it seems like you are taking a shot even though there is no chance it would go in.

I saw it already, and like I said, the problem was they threw the games so poorly. If they made it look better while trying to lose they would've been fine. And it is like the running and swimming heats - just like in those events, in badmiton the prelims are the round robin, and once you qualify, then there really is no credit for wins and losses, other than seeding. In the swimming and running, once you qualify for the next round, there really is no credit for wins and losses other than lane placement. Again, the biggest issue is that they looked so terrible in throwing the match, not that they didn't want to win.

I think the US was leading the total count in '08, while China had more gold, so we were all saying most medals wins and he was just having one of his implosions. So enjoyable to watch. :lol:
