True, but I'm guessing that 1) elder poverty rates were much higher, 2) end of life care was much poorer, and 3) we were culturally different and more accepting of our roles in providing care for our parents. Aint no time for that these days...

Neo-cons and neo-libs both love huge federal government...they simply disagree on which segments need more bloating
I'm sure you'd be okay with federal retirement being gutted, with no one being grandfathered in... :coffee:
Does your plan also eliminate all the social give-aways to people who did nothing to earn it? At least I worked for the retirement you propose taking away

Did I propose taking it away or say you didn't earn it? I don't think I did.

The "with SS" should have been "without SS". Typo.

Does not "gutted' =. taking away...or do I need to learn a hip, new language?

Of all the things that chap my ass in the world (and the list is long)

our social safety net doesnt make the cut

It just isn't that costly in the grand scheme of things - and people need to consider what our bottom 15% would be up to if they weren't getting that check

I agree if you're talking about the chunk that really needs it and don't abuse the system...but there is the chunk that doesn't need it, and abuse it because its available, ripe for the taking. The system is rife with waste and abuse. Just google welfare abuse and there are countless stories..

If you think giving money to the bottom 15% in order to suppress unrest is a good investment, by all means do it. But don't support government programs that force other people to do it as well.

Charity should never, ever be compulsory.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Show me any government magical free money program that ISN'T abused-

farm subsidies - abused
SSA- abused
Medicare/Medicaid- abused
Byzantine tax codes- abused

If we cut out ALL the fraud in the welfare system we'd save what amounts to a rounding error

and yes they use drugs too - still not worth what would happen if we cut all the users off
