I am a royal pain in their asses, but I grade to the maximum permitted by the school's curve.
Learning is what's important. Grading ultimately means nothing. What you remember is important.
I had a student this semester who had a hard time getting things the first time. I made her work pretty hard to get things right. She really didn't deserve an A, but I gave it to her, and told her, "You worked your tail off to get this A, so I hope you'll never forget what you learned to earn this grade." I think positive reinforcement and reward really helps a student remember what they learn. They are more likely to remember what they've learned when you reward them for their work.
If you dick a student around for the semester, make them work hard, and then screw them anyway on the grade, they will want to forget about everything about that class ASAP.
