I don't know if wanting a cheaper flat screen TV is really GREEDY. I mean, a consumer goes out and sees one 50 inch flatscreen for $200 and another one that's about the same quality for $400 I don't know if it's GREEDY to choose the cheaper one.Chizzang wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 4:34 pmGreed...CID1990 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 17, 2020 4:04 pm
In December, China concealed the virus, denied human to human transmission, sequestered healthcare officials who were trying to get the word out, and continue to arrest and disappear people who criticize the government response. China lost precious time that could have been used to lock down the virus and instead used that time to cover up what was happening.
A couple of the above ^^^^ could easily have happened in other countries due to poor organization or leadership. But in China they happened precisely because China was just being China.
And now they are propagating on Weibo that the US brought the virus to China.

Re: Coronavirus
It’s a summary of the Imperial College London report plus a link to the entire study that changed the minds of Trump and England’s Boris Johnson and why we’re seeing more extreme measures being taken now.
The report uses predictive computer modeling for likely scenarios with mitigation or suppression tactics.
We will be in this, hopefully with a few occasional breaks until a vaccine is produced which will be approximately 18 months.
No need to panic. Just psychologically be smart and prepared.

But yeah- you’re right
We totally created China, starting with Richard Nixon, and out foreign policy has been fucked ever since.
The whole idea, in a nutshell, for the last 60 years, has been that if we allow China into our markets, that their middle classes will rise up eventually and demand libertarian reforms. That they would become more like us..
I probably would have agreed with these policies at the time, since I am data driven, and in the 1960s there wasn’t a lot of data to go on.
But the lesson here is that if you feed capital into the maw of a command economy, it’s captains will profit from it through increased coercive power.
We all argue about what system is best... but it is becoming obvious to me that no system is best - as a collective we all default towards one flavor of authoritarianism or another
Which to me is an even greater argument towards decentralization and libertarianism... I would rather be one million small tents than 2 huge ones

Re: Coronavirus
Had to exchange a cable box and two remotes for new ones at the cable store.
Walmart was next door so I figured I might as well keep on stocking.
No TP, paper towels, bread except English Muffins, hot dogs, butter.
So there was this rack in the middle of a wide aisle with marked down items. As I walked by I noticed some giant Slim Jims (called Monster). They were marked down to 25 cents. I haven't had one in probably 30 years. I don't know how much they normally cost but I bought 8 because I couldn't think of anything that costs 25 cents.
