RICHMOND, Va. – If one has ever talked to Jamie Skeen, it's automatically clear what his lifelong dream is and has always been. He wants to play basketball at the professional level.

On Wednesday evening, Skeen's dream became reality as the former Virginia Commonwealth University men's basketball standout signed with ASVEL Basketball Club in Lyon, France. San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker is partial owner and Director of Basketball Operations for the organization.

"I can't put into words how I feel right now," Skeen said. "I've worked my whole life for to get a profesional opportunity and can't wait to get over there and give it all I have. I feel so blessed to have such a great support system from my family to my teammates to my coaches."

SMART ADDS CHRISTIAN, MORRELL TO COACHING STAFF



RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men's basketball program welcomed two new members to its family on Wednesday with Head Coach Shaka Smart announcing the additions of Jamion Christian and Michael Morrell to his coaching staff.

Christian comes to the Black & Gold sidelines after spending the past three years at William & Mary, while Morrell will serve as the Director of Basketball Operations and joins the Rams after spending last year as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern.

"We are extremely excited about Jamion and Mike joining our staff," Smart said. "Both are highly talented young coaches, who come from strong backgrounds of success."

Hewitt Completes Men's Basketball Coaching Staff with Hire of Mike Wells


FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason head men's basketball coach Paul Hewitt announced Thursday the hiring of Mike Wells as an assistant coach, rounding out Hewitt's staff after joining the Patriots in May. Wells arrives in Fairfax following an extensive career in the professional ranks, most recently as assistant coach and advance scout with the NBA's Washington Wizards.

Towson U. gets Georgetown transfer

Baltimore Sun: Towson University has beaten out Old Dominion to get Georgetown transfer Jerrelle Benimon, according to a college source.

Benimon played two years with the Hoyas, averaging 10 minutes per game last season, before deciding to leave. Last week he visited Old Dominion, which offered him a scholarship out of Fauquier High School in Warrenton, Va. He visited Towson prior to that.

A 6-foot-7, 235-pound forward, Benimon will have to sit out the 2011-12 season, but he can play for the Tigers for two years. He averaged 21 points and 17 rebounds in his senior year at Fauquier with four blocks per game.

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion women's basketball will participate in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam at University of the Virgin Islands, November 24-26. The Lady Monarchs are joined by Alabama, Louisiana Tech and Seton Hall in the "Island" Division.

Old Dominion will take on all three opponents in round-robin action, starting with Alabama on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. The Lady Monarchs will then face Louisiana Tech on the second day of three-day event on Nov. 25 at 4:15 p.m. ODU will conclude action at the Paradise Jam with a matchup against Lady Monarch Legend Anne Donovan and Seton Hall on Nov. 26 at 2 p.m.

All game times are listed as Atlantic Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time. Games will be played at the U.V.I. Sports and Fitness Center, the Caribbean's premier basketball facility located in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Nayquan Mitchell noted happily Tuesday that, now that he has signed to play basketball at Old Dominion, he's "just a bus ride" from his native Queens, N.Y. Mitchell averaged 12 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.3 blocks last season at Lon Morris. He would have signed with Houston had coach Tom Penders not resigned, he said. Instead, the 6-foot-7-1/2 forward became the first junior college player coach Blaine Taylor has signed at ODU.

SMART SELECTED AS A COURT COACH FOR 2011 USA BASKETBALL MEN’S WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES TRAINING CAMP


COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – In just a over a week, the 2011 USA Basketball Men's World University Games National Team Training Camp will get underway in Colorado Springs, Colo. While the red, white and blue will be the most popular colors of choice, black and gold may not be far off.

It was announced today that VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart will join rising senior Bradford Burgess during the week-long stay at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Smart was selected as one of three court coaches to assist during training camp. He will be joined by Tony Bennett of Virginia and Sean Miller of Arizona.

"I'm excited about being a part of this process and getting the opportunity to be around some high-level coaches and a roster of terrific players," Smart said. "Most importantly, it's great to have the chance to accompany VCU's own Bradford Burgess along on his quest to represent our country

RODNEY THE RAM SELECTED TO COMPETE IN 2011 CELEBRITY MASCOT GAMES

This spring while the VCU Men's Basketball team was getting noticed on the court, Rodney the Ram was winning fans over in the stands. The post-season run helped secure VCU's mascot a place in the 2011 Celebrity Mascot Games hosted by the Central Florida Sports Commission to benefit New Hope for Kids. This is the 19th year the event will take place; it is held annually at the Amway Center and Stetson University.

GAMES
Rodney will be participating in events alongside some famous competition from both collegiate and professional teams. Mascots from the Baltimore Orioles, Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros, Louisiana State University, New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Texas Rangers, University of Kansas, University of Oregon, and Stanley Cup finalists the Vancouver Canucks will be in attendance.

The games will take place starting on July 27th until August 1st. From their arrival in Florida, the mascots have a schedule heavy with appearances including visiting the Arnold Palmer Hospital, autograph signings, a trip to Universal Studios, and a dinner where they will be performing skits. On Thursday, July 28th the games will begin at Stetson University and on Friday and Saturday the group will travel to Amway Center and conduct a second competition there.

SPRAINED ANKLE TO KEEP BURGESS OUT OF USA BASKETBALL WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES TRAINING CAMP


RICHMOND, Va. – Rising senior Bradford Burgess of the VCU men's basketball team will not be traveling to Colorado Springs this weekend, as originally planned.

Burgess, who was among 22 invitees to the USA Basketball Men's World University Game Training Camp, suffered a sprained ankle this week and will not make the trip out west.

The injury will not affect the upcoming 2011-12 season for the Midlothian, Va. native, who will be one of two returning starters from last year's Final Four squad.

Since coming to VCU, Burgess has started all 110 games for the Black & Gold.

The highlight of Brandenberg's freshman season likely came when he blocked a shot at the buzzer to preserve VCU's NCAA Southwest Regional semifinal overtime victory over Florida State. That represented just the most prominent example of how the 6-foot-2 guard can harass teams with his 6-7 wingspan. Brandenberg also can make an impact on offense, as he exceeded the 20-point mark twice last season while filling in for the injured Brandon Rozzell. Brandenberg finished his freshman season averaging 4.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 13.7 minutes, but he should exceed those totals this season because he almost certainly will move into the starting lineup. VCU must replace starting guards Joey Rodriguez and Ed Nixon from its Final Four team.
