Humans didn't evolve from apes. Humans and apes share a common ancestor. At some point, they branched off just as humans branched off into homo sapiens sapiens and homo sapiens neanderthalis. When the bible-thumpers say they didn't evolve from apes, they're actually correct. It's the only thing they're right about, though.
