PIT-BUF is going to OT, tied 1-1. Hooking by PIT as the horn sounded, so they go into OT a man down.
They changed ends halfway through the third. The announcers made a big deal of it, but didn't exactly explain why that action was taken.

What a dummy. I didn't know this was a three-year-old game played as filler because the REAL game is rain-delayed. I tuned in about mid-way through the third after getting up late, and the network didn't say anything.

you guys must really get confused any time you turn on ESPN classic, (or the majority of airtime on the Big Ten network, CBS sports, etc.)

You're assuming that people actually have cable/dish.JayJ79 wrote:you guys must really get confused any time you turn on ESPN classic, (or the majority of airtime on the Big Ten network, CBS sports, etc.)
Bringing up ESPN Classic is a red herring. Those are all old games BY DEFINITION. Running into an old game at a time when a LIVE game is expected is ENTIRELY different.

Classic was a lot of fun. Folks in Pittsburgh were really nice for the most part. There's always assholes at every sporting event, but we met and talked to a lot of great fans. Plus the Caps won, so it was a perfect trip. The 8pm start was fantastic, at least those of us who drove up that day. Had time to eat, drink and be merry.
The only down side, was the viewing was absolutely horrible. That said, I would most definitely go again.

OK, so who will be in the 2012 Classic? It should be in NYC, but the problem is location. Yankee Stadium is tied up with a crappy bowl game and it would be hard to have in the Meadowlands since you have two NFL teams to put on the road for two weeks. Ideally it should be Kings at Rangers to get a western team involved. The other good possibility is Denver. I'm pretty sure it's cold enough there for a game at Mile High. Devils at Avs? Philly will get one within three years so they could be waiting for Devils for that one.
I will say, having two teams close together was great for the fans attending. There were probably 15,000+ Caps fans there on Saturday.

Re: Pens/Caps Get Next Winter Classic - in Pittsburgh
They said repeatedly on TV that the split was 30K Caps/40K Pens. Not sure how they came up with that estimate...maybe based on where the tix buyers lived (there are alot of Pens fans down here). Your estimate seems more accurate based on what I saw on TV.89Hen wrote:OK, so who will be in the 2012 Classic? It should be in NYC, but the problem is location. Re: Pens/Caps Get Next Winter Classic - in Pittsburgh
Yes, there is no way it was 30/40. There were tons of Caps fans, but 1 in 4 was the MAX. The only thing that would have been cooler is if they could have somehow split the tix like bowl games where one side of the stadium was red and white the other black/blue/gold. We had 6 guys in our group. Two of the tix were from our season tix, the other four from a guy we know who has 6 season tix. We were in complete opposite corners of the stadium.bandl wrote:They said repeatedly on TV that the split was 30K Caps/40K Pens. Why NYC? New York State has already had a Winter Classic. Mile High would be a good choice as it would likely avoid the freak rain seen in Blitzburgh this year. I'd be more inclined to see the game played at Tiger Stadium, McMahon Stadium (Calgary), or Rogers Centre (ex-SkyDome) with open roof with at least one Canadian team involved.89Hen wrote:OK, so who will be in the 2012 Classic? Citi Field is open in December.
Any combination of the 3 NYC teams would do fine:
Devils, Isles and/or Rangers.

There are only a few NHL cities in the US that can host: Boston, NYC, Buffalo, Philly, Pittsburgh, DC (iffy), Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, Denver. They're not going to have it in Canada. They're not going to have it indoors.

Dunno. If you have it at Citi, wouldn't it have to be the Isles? They have become completely irrelevant in the NHL. Would anyone outside of Long Island care?danefan wrote:Citi Field is open in December.

Probably need to add Columbus and St. Louis to the list.89Hen wrote:There are only a few NHL cities in the US that can host: Boston, NYC, Buffalo, Philly, Pittsburgh, DC (iffy), Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, Denver. They're not going to have it in Canada. They're not going to have it indoors.

Wouldn't have to be the Isles but it makes the most local sense. Most Isles fans are Mets fans.89Hen wrote:Dunno. If you have it at Citi, wouldn't it have to be the Isles? Rangers vs. Devils at the Meadowlands would probably be the best matchup, but logistically I don't see it happening as you mentioned above. What about doing it at Rutgers stadium?

Capacity is now 52,454.

Not big enough, and I don't think the NHL would go to a college campus, unless it wanted to do the Big House for a Red Wings game (but I doubt that since it's already been done by UM/MSU). They really wanted Yankee Stadium.danefan wrote:Wouldn't have to be the Isles but it makes the most local sense. Most Isles fans are Mets fans.

Rutgers Stadium is bigger than Yankee stadium, but I get the college campus issue.89Hen wrote:Not big enough, and I don't think the NHL would go to a college campus, unless it wanted to do the Big House for a Red Wings game (but I doubt that since it's already been done by UM/MSU). Caps-Pens was the most-watched Winter Classic ever with 4.5 million viewers, up 22 percent from last year. It was the most-watched NHL regular-season game in 36 years, according to NBC.
