Yup. Just a coincidence. Nothing to see here.
CO2 does trap heat, but there have been warmings on this planet where the CO2 has risen after the temps have risen, that's why IMO, there are probably other factors involved. It doesn't prove anything one way or another. The planet may be warmer today, but one major volcanic event, and we may be down to 3000 humans again as in past events. The earth recovered. Coal and Natural Gas 53% of the US use of fossil fuels, mainly electricity generation. We'll have to increase the burning of these fossil fuels if we turn to electric cars, so why not go Nuclear. Heck Obama said if we can go to the moon in 10 years, I say why can't we find a use for spent Nuclear rods. France is trying.

That being said, my wifes cousin is moving to S Carolina because her husband is transferring from the Red Wing Nuke plant to a new plant being built in the South.

Why does everyone have their panties in a bunch about global warming?

Who cares? Seriously, what difference will it make to the human race and to those of us in this country?

People will adapt. Crops can be replanted to where the temperatures allow them to grow. Some animals and people will die while others will thrive...nothing new there. Rich people will still jet around and their big lifestyles will still blow through 10 million kWhs per day while they will be telling the rest of us to conserve.

Canada is going to be a wonderful place to vacation with a lot more usable summer time coastline. :thumb:

Cripes, you'd think the Democrats would LOVE global warming. As the sea levels rise, the rich will lose their waterfront properites while the middle class, currently regulated to houses several miles from the beach, will be thriving 50-100 years from now while having clam bakes in their front yards. Woo-hoo! :notworthy:

Everyone is just being distracted by this issue...it is really of no importance overall. The Earth, and humans, will adapt.

I used to worry about global warming and the environment.

Then I realized that no matter how bad humans are f'ing up the planet, they'll never change their ways to any significant degree. So I've given up on worrying.

Considering it is a graph comparing CO2 levels with global temperatures... I think the date chosen to start it has to do more with the timing of the Industrial Revolution.

The Industrial Revolution didn't start until 1880? You want to try a different answer?

It's easier to adapt when you know what is coming. That is why I think it is important to study global warming. Not to place blame, but to get an idea of what to expect. If my inland vacant lot is going to becoem beachfront property I want to know.

I'm pretty much right there with you. This is, after all, a species that will wage worldwide battle with itself and then forget about it and do the same thing again twenty years later. Rinse. Repeat.

What baffles me is that when you have two glaring problems (current predominant energy source dwindling, global temperature rising), both of which can be improved (or at least the negatives slowed) simultaneously with existing or near-attainable technology, why certain people are resistant to trying to improve the situation. Why would you purposely turn a blind eye to self-improvement and the potential well-being of your descendants? It seems terribly negligent, if not sinister, to me. :twocents:

Those resistant are the ones making staggering profits under the status quo. Probably they feel that their money will take care of their descendants in a world of dwindling resources and they really don't care about what happens to the planet after they check out.

Sky, me again after posting to you on this matter on another thread. What you show in that picture is an association over a certain time frame. Observational association does not infer cause and effect. With respect to the graph above there are numberous possibilities. Increasing CO2 could cause increasing temperature, increasing temperature could cause increasing CO2, or some other factor or set of factors could cause both increasing temperature and increasing CO2.

Also, the graph above looks at a very short time frame in the context of the history of this planet. The graph below shows a much longer time frame and the association is not so clear:

I'm dying for one of the AGW people here to ask how can scientists possibly know for sure what the global averages were during prehistory.
Well, normally when I post a graph like that I make sure to describe it as showing what is generally BELIEVED about whatever the parameters are way back then. In the past one opinion I've stated is that it's ridiculous to say things like "the warmest it's been for 180,000 years" when they may be talking about a difference of maybe 2 degrees C and they are trying to estimate what GLOBAL mean temperature was based on something like ratios of substances in bubbles trapped in ice cores taken from a small area of the Earth's surface. Even if they're correct about what the ratios mean with respect to what temperatures were at the core location, they would need a probability sample of the entire surface to come up with an unbiased estimate of the mean.

But the graph does show what is generally believed so we can say that if we go with what the people making a big deal out of temperatures now believe about what temperatures and CO2 levels and temperatures have been over the history of the planet have been, we can say that we are in a cool period and also say that there is not a real strong association over geologic time between temperatures and CO2 levels. Basically the graph suggests that CO2 levels have generally declined while temperatures have gone in cycles up and down throughout.

I'm sure there is some correlation and maybe you could tease out a stronger one by "accounting" for other factors but looking at what's believed about the long term history certainly gives a different impression than just looking at the last 130 years or so does.
