I agree. I don't tout 6 NC's, but I will argue if SomEone tryies to deny it as a fact.Appaholic wrote:UD's claim of 6 NC's is as valid as North Carolina claiming the 1924 NC in basketball....sure...great...can't dispute it, but not impressed...whatever makes you feel adequate...
The only titles that interest me are the ones that I was able to enjoy. At the moment there is only one of those.
Re: Delaware's Championships
I don't know of many people that tout our six championships. The only time I do is when the uneducated start piping off about it. How many times have we seen the cycle repeat itself? ESPN covers one of our games, rightly mentions our six championships, then some short-dick from a school with six or less championships gets their panties in a bunch and starts calling our championships all "D2" or "NAIA" or worse. Bottom line is, Delaware has been a torchbearer school at this level since before many of our parents were born. Our previous three coaches are all in the College Football Hall of Fame and the current one is going to the championship game for the third time in seven years with a chance to get his second ring. To deny that history is disrespectful.BlueHen86 wrote:I agree. Re: Delaware's Championships
I seldom get into these pissing matches relative to who has the biggest dick.. but this is an area that is a little personal with me. UD's winning tradition started way back in the 40's with a team my dad played on that finished the '46 season with a 30 game unbeaten streak and ranked #19 in country in the AP poll.. not #19 in DII but #19 with the big boys like Notre Dame.. Michigan and Army. That winning tradition continued proudly over the next six decades. Sure there have other outstanding programs at this level.. YSU, GSU, Montana and ASU.. but those are ALL 'johnny come latelys' when compared to the Hen's 60+ years of excellence. Not to demean any of the previously mentioned schools.. as they have all had some great years.. however not one of them has the history or the tradition to match the 60+ years of excellence that has been University of Delaware football.

Re: Delaware's Championships
Look. I don't much care for Delaware, but the school's contributions to the sport of football are undeniable. From the Wing-T Offense (which I dislike but must acknowledge has had repercussions on the sport at all levels) to HOF coaches to great players to introducing that great helmet insignia that was flat-out STOLEN by Michigan, Delaware is worthy of profound respect.
Like the Yankees, that doesn't mean we have to like them. But to ignore all of Delaware's contributions in smacking them is VERY disingenuous.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

I always thought Princeton introduced the design. And I think it's stupid when people call out schools for copying helmet designs...it's an effing helmet for god's sake.SuperHornet wrote: to introducing that great helmet insignia that was flat-out STOLEN by Michigan, Delaware is worthy of profound respect.
Re: Delaware's Championships
Thanks for the kind words, but the design wasn't original to either school. It was devised by Fritz Crisler at Princeton and got to Delaware via Dave Nelson from Michigan.SuperHornet wrote:...that great helmet insignia that was flat-out STOLEN by Michigan...

Given that FBS sucks, it at least sounds better coming from Delaware.93henfan wrote:Thanks for the kind words, but the design wasn't original to either school. Re: Delaware's Championships
Delaware's last game was cancelled in 1963. Since you are an ASU fan I will remind you that on 11-22-63 President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The 11-23-63 game was cancelled. Things like this happen outside of Boone.Skjellyfetti wrote:And how many titles of yours were shared? I know your 1963 title is also claimed by Northern Illinois... and they won two more games than y'all that year.
The 1963 team beat 4 teams from the "University" Division including Rutgers, Temple, Connecticut, and Ohio.
For some reason UD and Bucknell were not concerned in November of 1963 how some goober in 2010 would assess the cancellation of a game due to the death of a president.

shared championships happen. Doesn't make Delaware any less a National Champion.Skjellyfetti wrote:Northern Illinois was the AP national champion. It WAS shared.93henfan wrote:

Most recent incident to compare to... USC was screwed by the BCS rankings in 2003 and Oklahoma got into the title game. The AP had USC #1 while the Coaches poll had LSU (by contractual obligation) #1 after the bowl games... prior to the bowl games both polls had USC #1... Does that make LSU or USC any less a National Champion?

Yes. In at least that instance, it does. The FBS people agreed on the BCS system to determine their "national champion". And OU and LSU were #1 and #2 in their standings.UNHWildCats wrote:shared championships happen. Doesn't make Delaware any less a National Champion.Skjellyfetti wrote:

N Colorado won two in the mid 90's.. when I-AA had already been in existence for nearly 20 yrs. UD won DII titles when there was no FCS/I-AA.. when there was only DI and DII.. if you can't see the difference.. wellJBS wrote:Northern Colorado must be more relevant than we thought!! So do we count NDSU's 3 titles between 1965 and 1969 as equal to FCS/I-AA titles as well?

1979 season had victories over URI, Lehigh, Villanova, W&M, Maine, YSU (2x) and Colgate. Absoulutely.. DII was the next level down from the big boys then.. just as FCS/I-AA is now.Skjellyfetti wrote:So do we count NDSU's 3 titles between 1965 and 1969 as equal to FCS/I-AA titles as well?

Re: Delaware's Championships
So, can we get an official year-by-year listing of every "next highest level below the top level" champion, please?
How about Lehigh's 1974 DII title? Montana State's 1976 DII title?
What about Delaware's 1979 title? That was a D-II title... the same year Eastern Kentucky won the I-AA title. How do y'all rationalize that counting the same as an FCS/I-AA title? Did we have 2 I-AA equivalent titles that year?
And if you count Delaware's 1979 title as an FCS/I-AA title... you surely have to count Eastern Illinois's 1978 D-II championship as an FCS/I-AA championship (even though Florida A&M actually won it). You'd also have to count Cal Poly's 1980 D-II title as a I-AA/FCS title (even though Boise State won the I-AA title). Right?

I'm particularly interested in how y'all rationalize a 1979 D-II championship as a I-AA championship.
