If it was so easy to just pick out of a crowd the sick and perverted people, we as a society would do that irregardless if they wanted to be Catholic clergy or not. However, there's a lot of sick and perverted subhumans who seem perfectly fine until their crimes come to light.
JoltinJoe has a stat/source that shows the percentage of pedofiles is higher among the general population than that in the Catholic priesthood. It sends D1B in hiding or into fits of namecalling all the time.

I've never heard of such a thing. Deacons can be married. One of my FIL good friends was married, had a big old family. His wife died, the family was all out of the house and became a priest. But I've never heard of a active Catholic priest being married.
it was a one-off from the Pope fairly recently...

SH is right - Anglican priests that are married and convert to Catholicism can remain married and can be priests in the Catholic Church. It's been that way for several years now. Might even extend to other Protestant faiths too, for all I know. But the Anglican one is certainly true.

The main reason Andy hadn't heard of it is that there are so few. If I remember my conversation with that chaplain from four or five years ago, there are only like ten in the entire US (not to mention just him in the military).

I wouldn't doubt if it were true - there's scores of child abuse out there that has nothing to do with the Catholic Church. What makes the abuse in the Church so heinous is that its religious leaders using their positions of power and the Church did a large amount of coverup to hide it/not prevent it from continuing. Throw in a little already out there anti-Catholicism anyway, and you have what you have.

Uhh, no it doesn't Andyfatfuck. My boilerplate response to his catholic apologist studies is as follows:

1. Catholic priests should not be doing that shit, period. They're held to a higher standard than your average joe.

2. The sinister complexity and incredible depth, and involvement up to and including the pope, of the cover up is a uniquely catholic phenomenon and doesn't garner you any sympathy.

3. Last but not least is the depth of depravity on the part of priests as well as the sheer numbers of victims involved per priest. You have some sick fucks for priests Andy. 200+ deaf boys!? Are you fucking kidding me? One offender but hundreds of victims. :ohno: Not aware a sophisticated network of enablers and cover up pros existing in the swim clubs and school districts, well non-catholic school districts, to allow that to happen, for decades in some cases.

*We've only seen the tip of the iceberg too. Tens of thousands of victims have yet to come forward. Europe's scandel has just started.

*you should be embarrassed to be a part of that racket Andy. Hope you're proud. :ohno:

the way the youth hockey league in Saskatchewan covered up abuse by coaches must have never happened either...

it's reprehensible, but it's hardly unique to the church.

It isn't unique to the Church; but it's a deep pocket, and that makes it a litigation target.

As noted above, there are now three objective studies which conclude that the rate of abuse by Catholic priests is either the same or lower as the population at large.

Just the tip of the iceberg - tens of thousands of victims have not come forward, yet. Many never will due to threats from the church or priest.

whoa whoa whoa JJ

I know Jeff personally. I work with Jeff frequently. His motivation is NOT personal financial gain. I have, in my life, never EVER met a more committed person. Anderson goes after pedophiles and abusers - any way he can, and anywhere he finds them. He's committed vast amounts of personal resources to that end as well - frequently working pro-bono for victims of abuse - and I LIKE the fact that he's gone after a culture that protects abusers... it sends a clear message (and a correct one) that those who cover up abuse are just as guilty as the offenders themselves...

That "watchdog" website is an arm of Jeffrey Anderson, who has made millions fanning the flames of this issue for personal gain.

If there was any money to be made by suing the hockey clubs, he'd have a "watchdog" site set up and suing them too.
whoa whoa whoa JJ

I know Jeff personally. I work with Jeff frequently. His motivation is NOT personal financial gain. I have, in my life, never EVER met a more committed person. Anderson goes after pedophiles and abusers - any way he can, and anywhere he finds them. He's committed vast amounts of personal resources to that end as well - frequently working pro-bono for victims of abuse - and I LIKE the fact that he's gone after a culture that protects abusers... it sends a clear message (and a correct one) that those who cover up abuse are just as guilty as the offenders themselves...

"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."
