Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
Besides last season, my biggest letdown would either have to be a 28 -14 loss to Nicholls St in '93, a 16-14 loss to Jackson St in '95 or a 36-34 loss to Alcorn in '03.
The Nicholls game hurt because we had just knocked off Steve McNair and Alcorn St to claim our first SWAC title, the Nicholls game was homecoming and they dominated us, costing the Jags an undefeated season.
Jackson State we had a late fumble going for what would have been the winning TD, again costing us an undefeated season.
Alcorn we had the QB sacked for a big loss, somehow he gets free and lofts a ball up to a receiver in the end zone, costing us, you guessed it an undefeated season.

In my time of following ASU (1999 - present), here is the order:
#6: 1999 FAMU
#5: 2008 JMU
#4: 2008 Richmond
#3: 2009 ECU
#2: 2000 Montana
Biggest Letdown: 2009 @ Montana. I had been waiting since 2000 for another shot at the Griz. Seeing AE have to walk off the field for the last time with the game ending that way...that sucked. I am glad I wasn't there to see it in person...it was bad enough on TV.

ASUM, your fans were the class of the nation after that loss. Just thought I would let you know.

Re: Your biggest letdown. . .
For me it was the 1997 semi-final loss to Youngstown State. We were on a roll that year, third home playoff game in a row at Joe Albi....and then to lose the way we did was rough.kalm wrote:Yep. And had we won it would have sent us to Missoula for a rematch in the semi's.Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:Single game, I would definitely say 2004 quarterfinals against SHSU. First playoff game in Cheney in EWU history, leading by 20 points in the 4th (missed XP earlier), and we go into prevent defense. And you know what they say about prevent defense... SHSU scored a TD on the last play of the game to tie it, and kicked the XP with no time left FTW.
As for season... 2008, no doubt. Returning most of our QF team from 07 that destroyed McNeese and played NC App pretty close in Boone, Matt Nichols and Aaron Boyce's junior year... I thought we were destined for great things, and so did most everyone else. I guess it can't be overstated how much a coaching change can affect your team, even if the hire is someone from inside your own program and knows it well... (AM I RIGHT MONTANA!!? )
The 2004 Sam Houston playoff game would probably be a close second, although I wasn't present for that one so it doesn't sting as much.
As far as seasons.........2006. Not so much because I had high expectations from an extremely young team, but we had just gone to the playoffs the two previous years and had the Payton Winner in 2005. Yep, 2006. We were god-awful that year.

That '99 FAMU team was pretty tough, Southern went to Tallahassee 8-0 and got thumped 65-18. I'll never forget that game.ASUMountaineer wrote:In my time of following ASU (1999 - present), here is the order:

Losing to Wofford by 1, at home, as a seed, on the last play on Carpenter's missed FG. That team had, what, 6-7 NFL players on it?

in our short history we haven't had that many let downs but if I had to pick it would definitely be the WM game this past season.∞∞∞ wrote:Losing to W&M after leading for 55 minutes sucked. '82 NC game, losing by 3 points to EKU on the strength of a blocked FG returned for a TD...
'91 Playoff opening round, losing in overtime (or double OT) to JMU with the last play being a botched option pitch at the one yard line...
'92 Playoffs semifinals, losing to Marshall after all everything QB Vergantino enters the game with the flu and is puking all over the sideline in the first half before not being able to take the field in the second half...
'93 Playoffs quarterfinal, losing to Marshall after tying the game with a TD, and then failing to fall on fumble deep in Marshall territory on the ensuing kickoff, and having Marshall kick a last second FG to win...
'97 Playoffs semifinal, losing to McNeese on a last second FG after failing to knock down a pass on a 4th and 1 on the last drive...
'00 Playoffs semifinals, losing to GSU at home...
'04 Playoffs quarterfinal, losing in OT to W&M after leading by 21 points entering the 4th quarter, and then somehow Omar Cuff with 150+ rushing yards not even getting a single touch of the ball in the 4th quarter...
'07 National title game when the pregame announcement was that MEAC refs would be doing the game...
And of course last year.

About 7-8 games into the 2009 season I was about ready to commit Seppuku. We were 1-6, 1-7 and nobody knew HOW THE HELL we got to this point.
I thought we got jobbed at the end of the EWU playoff game, but more so because of the blind replay guy than Fette. I didn't let it get to me much afterwards, though. So it wasn't as big of a letdown to me than it was to lakes.

The Sam Houston State loss in the playoffs will forever hold a place among dumbest comeback losses in history... and makes every Eagle fan cringe. As for the 2008 year, we scheduled ourselves out of a good season that year. Opening with a top 10 team in Texas Tech and then losing in Boulder to Colorado on a late INT. After those two losses, it took us until late in the season to regain our swagger. Montana fans will remember that year as the one in which we kept their Big Sky title or co-title strak alive by beating Weber State in Ogden in the last week. At the end of that season, we were as good as anyone out West.
But to me the most disappointing game was 1997 v. Youngstown State in the semi-finals. We were SOOOOO much better than them and just played like crap. Hell, they went on to win the whole thing that year. They just showed up and we didn't. The tone was set on the first drive when we fumbled at about the one inch line.

But yeah, I think Marleau held his own pretty well for not being a brawler.
