Correia was pitching like an All Star the first two months of the season, but has been more of the pitcher we expected since then...a 4/5 type that gives consistently decent outings. He was only on the roster because Hamels pitched right before the break and wouldn't have been available. Correia was only going to get into the game if it went to extra innings, which it didn't. Nothing big there.

I still can't believe it took McCutchen that long to get a spot though, and I was annoyed last night by how little he was used (defensive sub in the 7th after Kemp had 3 plate appearances). That doesn't qualify as 'the second half of the game' to me, Bochy, but whatever. It's just an All Star Game, no reason to get incensed :P

I'll be interested to see what this team does with the deadline looming. We're due to improve a lot by the end of the month without having to add anyone to the roster...but we still need an improvement somewhere, preferably at one of the power corners. Ryan Doumit, Ronny Cedeno, Jose Tabata, and Joe Beimel will be returning from injuries soon and Pedro Alvarez's spell in AAA after his rehab stint shouldn't last past this month. Doumit & Cedeno usually wouldn't be considered upgrades...but considering we're using our 5th & 6th string catchers right now Doumit will at least give the position some offense and Cedeno has been lights out defensively, which has been a huge help for our pitching since so many of our pitchers are sinkerballers that rely on that. d'Arnaud is just wild. Tabata was starting to warm up after a lengthy slump, and should make Diaz appearances rarer and rarer, which is a very, very good thing. Beimel gives us a veteran lefty arm in the bullpen, compared to the rarely used rookie in his spot, Danny Moskos.

If a trade happens I'm smelling it from the Cubs direction. They've got lousy contracts they want to unleash...it's all about if Nutting will open up his wallet. I'm not really holding my breath.

51-44 now with sole possession of first place.

I don't know what's more surprising...that we've completely shut out the powerful Reds offense both games so far this series or that we've won two games with only 3 runs and 10 hits in those two games. Talk about a pitching dominated series...

Hopeful thoughts in that Pedro Alvarez is killing the ball in AAA. 4 for 4 tonight and 9 for his last 12 with a couple dingers. We need that bat.

Gotta say, I'm rooting heavily for the Pirates to win the Central. It could be a stumbling block for my Phils (we have a mental block with being able to win in Pittsburgh normally) but it's great for baseball to see the Pirates fielding a quality team. :thumb:

I would certainly enjoy not having to go through SF again, so yeah, count me in!

Man, these poor bastards took a beating against the NL East and it looks like they can't recover. Now they're making the Cubbies look good. :ohno:

Padres whacked Bucs at home today. Time to build for '12! :thumb:

Reality has slapped the young Pirates about the face and neck.

Lost nine in a row, 11 of 12, and fell from being a division leader to 10 games out of the wildcard.

Ouch.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates clinched their 19th consecutive losing season, a record for a major league franchise in North America, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Wednesday as Yadier Molina hit a tiebreaking, two-run double.

Their own record, apparantly.
From 2008:

SAN FRANCISCO -- Perhaps it was painfully appropriate.

With an excruciating, error-filled, erratic 11-6 loss to the San Francisco Giants on an otherwise golden Bay-side afternoon at AT&T Park, the 122-year-old Pittsburgh Baseball Club, the once-proud franchise of five World Series championships and Roberto Clemente and Honus Wagner, achieved an ignominious place in sporting history by clinching a 16th consecutive losing season.

That ties the 1933-48 Philadelphia Phillies for the longest such streak in Major League Baseball, and it exceeds that of any NFL, NHL or NBA team. Another losing season in 2009, and the Pirates' streak will stand alone in all of the major professional ranks.
