Unconscious, Gifford was carried off the field on a stretcher and examined. Wrapped in blankets with an ice-cold compress above his closed eyes, he was soon rolled on a gurney to an ambulance that hurried him to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
The diagnosis was said to be a “deep brain concussion,” and Gifford remained in the hospital for several days. His 1960 season was over...
