Title IX has decimated the wrestling college ranks...so I blame this on the chicks.

There are still well over 200 college programs, probably closer to 250. I agree that Title IX has really hurt the sport. UD had wrestling when I was there.

Cluck is WRONG. That answer is too simplistic. It's the negative reaction to a positive problem that idiot ADs make. It's the EASY way out, and one that was NOT intended by Title IX. The PROPER response would be to ADD women's sports, NOT drop men's sports.

86, of course, is correct.

B.S. Women don't care as much about sports. But they like taking advantage of the schollies. If you are pro-competition and equality, women should have been able to compete and raise interest at a similar level. They can't.

Adding women's sports was the desired result, but it isn't what happened. Adding sports would have meant increasing a schools budget, instead many schools decided to keep the budget the same and replace men's sports with women's sports in order to come into compliance.

Women's wrestling is a growing sport, but it is growing at time when the economy is bad, so schools are not quick to add it. Dropping the sport from the Olympics will make schools even lsee likely to add wrestling - men's or women's

EWU had a DII national championship in wrestling (79 I think) and was PAC-10 North in baseball before title 9. Both sports were dropped. :ohno:

There is a high school student here in PA named Chance Marsteller. When he was in 8th grade he entered a college open tourney and won 2 matches. Currently a junior, he has yet to lose a match in high school, in fact he has only been taken down twice. I would have been willing to bet money that he would be on team USA in the 2020 Olympics. I'm sure that he will try for 2016, and I won't bet against him, but 2020 would have given him more time to gain maturity and experience.

My son doesn't have Olympic aspirations, but he commited to wrestle for Franklin & Marshall College yesterday. :thumb:

F&M is located in Lancaster PA, about an hour from where we live. It is D-I for wrestling, D-III for everything else. They wrestle in the EIWA conference, along with the 6 Ivy league schools that have wrestling (Columbia, Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Penn and Harvard), Navy, Army, Lehigh, Bucknell, Rutgers, American and Sacred Heart. Rutgers will be leaving to join the Big 10 next year.

Hard to believe that it was even up for consideration of being dropped, let along actually getting the ax. Clearly there was a lot of politics involved.

But can he beat Dad?

Congrats, 86! I hope he gets a schollie out of the deal and make things easier for you. At least you have a reason to go to wrestling meets now. I'd love for 86 Jr to win a league title or better.

Yes. I'm 50, he's 18. I have weight on him, but that is probably my only advantage. I'd probalby run out of gas in 20 seconds and it would get real ugly from there.

There's a pretty strong feeling within the wrestling community that FILA (the organization that governs wrestling) ignored the warnings and really screwed the pooch on this one. There was also internal politics and conflicts of interest (for example, Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr.is a member of the IOC board and vice president of the International Modern Pentathlon Union).

I don't give two shits about wrestling but this is a stupid idea.

Dan Gable's letter. Hopefully the wrestling world unites to correct this.

Huh? You have to have a bigger window than just right now. Compare the number of women's sports, and the women competing in them, with the number of sports and participants just before Title IX was passed. It's not even a question that the the amount of sports and opportunities exploded with the passage of Title IX. It's only been in the past decade or two that money strapped schools have started to meet the ratio requirement by cutting men's sports. And considering that football loses money at all but maybe 50 colleges in America you still have a find a way to answer that question of how come so many schollies are tied up in a men's sport that doesn't often cover its own costs and seems to be on a path to increase expenses year after year that we don't blame football for causing the cessation of other men's sports like wrestling.

As for Olympic wrestling, the rule with most Olympic sports is if the Europeans aren't any good at them, then those sports stand a chance to be cut. Europeans like to think they are still important, although they are less so every day (still a great place to visit though). :thumb:
