So you're saying if the playoff existed for the 2012 season Notre Dame wouldn't have made the playoffs that year?
And the Big 12 wasn't necessarily punished because of the lack of a title game. You could make the argument that had Georgia Tech held on in the ACC game and Michigan St won the Big 10 game that both Baylor and TCU would've made the playoffs, meaning two Big 12 teams. No, what happened was that other teams were rewarded for having a championship game, ala Ohio St getting in.
You're still on the clock for explaining how the Notre Dame team in 2012 would've been excluded from the 4-team playoff had it existed then. That'll be a doozy.
Why the fuck would I be on the clock for that? You're the only one who brought it up. But we both know how well that game ended for them, so were they deserving? Probably not.
I'm done with this thread. It's gone off course enough.

So an undefeated ND team would not be deserving of a playoff berth (i.e. a top 4 placement) because they got blown out in the title game. So basically, both Florida State and Oregon were not legitimate, or to use your word, "deserving" playoff participants this year due to their lopsided losses in the playoffs? It is best that you check out, you're clearly running out of illogic now.

Stop making stuff up. Players want to play for national titles, conference titles are just things you get on the way. And they want to play for more than that - TV time is great, playing for a great program is a plus, the coach matters, etc.
And really, how is Notre Dame getting "pounded" every year in the recruiting race? The past three seasons (2013-2015) ND has had, by Rivals, the #3, #11, and #11 recruiting classes in the nation. Plenty of schools who play in conferences are trailing Notre Dame in the recruiting race.
But the prior 3 seasons to that (10'-12' Rivals had them at #20, #14, #10. With all the huge national recruiting advantages ND has (national name, national Catholic flagship, TV contract) they should be top 5 recruit classes most seasons. Something is hampering them somewhat. If not not being in a conference, then what is it?

Players want championships, yes. But for conference titles they get rings too and they love that ****. Just fact.
So now if you don't win a national title you're recruiting isn't any good? Come on, think before you post, that's just darn right silly. ND was in a national title game two years ago, they beat an SEC team in a bowl game last year, and they're going to be a top 15 team at least this year. The recruiting ratings year after year are showing them to be doing just fine in terms of recruiting, sometimes a top 10 class and other times top 15, and their recent results on the field agree with that. They are clearly a nationally competitive team and apparently doing more than fine without being in a conference. How's that for "fact"?
They were in the NC game 3 years ago, not 2. They were overrated and got embarrassed on National TV by Bama. Yeah they are a nationally competitive program, but over the last 10 seasons (05'-14') they are 80-47. Avg about 8-5 over the last decade isn't very good considering they have all the advantages in the world except for being in a conference.. So its logical to think being in a conference would help. Certainly wouldn't be doing worse.
Last 10 seasons AP preseason & end of season AP rankings. For a program with all the advantages in the world except for being in a conference, why aren't they doing better? Again, why aren't they consistetnly top 5-10 in the recruiting classes and on the field results?

It's not very difficult at all - the thing holding Notre Dame back has nothing to do with a conference, and everything to do with the head coaching. Tell me again how successul Tyrone Willingham and Charlie Weiss have been in terms of head coaching? Surely they must still be coaching and racking up wins at other FBS level schools, no? I mean, clearly they were only held back by the lack of a conference and, once they began coaching in a conference I'm sure they had great winning percentages.
Brian Kelly may or may not be the answer, but he certainly has Notre Dame on the national radar as a nationally competitive team. People keep saying they got embarrassed by 'Bama in that national title game and say it's proof that they aren't any good, but then no one says FSU and Oregon were no good this past year despite losing badly in their last games, and despite being in conferences. Being in a conference is meaningless, and far less of an impact than the coaching is. No need to look futher than that.
